John Clayton reports for ESPN.com the St. Louis Rams are attempting to negotiate an injury settlement with newly signed WR Will Blackwell (knee injury). If they can't, they may have to put him on the injured reserve list and be subject to pay his $525,000 salary.

The Post Dispatch reports newly signed St. Louis Rams WR Will Blackwell (strained knee) was hurt during his first practice Tuesday with the team. Coach Mike Martz didn't seem too concerned. "I wanted to look at Will," Martz said after Tuesday's practice. "He's an experienced receiver, a high draft pick out of San Diego State. He had some knee problems the last few years but he seems to have resolved them pretty well. He's a really smart guy with lots of character, a big receiver who's got speed and excellent hands."

The Post Gazette reports WR Will Blackwell, who missed all of the 2001 season with a knee injury, has remained with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and after signing a waiver, has been practicing with them this spring. The team likely will sign him unless something unforeseen happens.

Ed Bouchette reports for the Post Gazette free agent WR Keith Poole reportedly turned down an offer from the Steelers before signing with the Denver Broncos. The Steelers eventually signed WR Tim Baker from their practice squad to replace injured WR Will Blackwell.

The Post Gazette reports Pittsburgh Steelers WR Will Blackwell likely will be placed on injured reserve and miss the rest of the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. WR Demetrius Brown, on the practice squad, is the most likely candidate to be added to the roster. Another WR on the practice squad is rookie Tim Baker. WR Plaxico Burress had an MRI to his right shoulder and said it was sprained, not separated. He hopes to practice tomorrow and play Sunday against Cleveland.

According to the Associated Press, Pittsburgh Steelers WR Will Blackwell reinjured his left knee during Sunday's game. Coach Bill Cowher said Blackwell, who missed the first half of last year with a knee injury, "will probably be done for the year."

The Post Gazette reports Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher said FB Dan Kreider (calf injury) and reserve G David Bobo (back) are doubtful for Thursday night's pre-season game. FB Jon Witman (back) continues to have his work in practice limited. He ended practice yesterday with a huge ice pack on his aching back. WR Will Blackwell (hamstring) returned to practice after missing the three previous workout days. His work was limited as well.

The Post-Gazette reports Pittsburgh Steelers FB Jon Witman (back) took part in contact drills at Saturday's practice to the surprise of coach Bill Cowher. "He did more today than I thought," Cowher said. FB Dan Kreider, who hasn't practiced since injuring his calf the first day of camp may not return to practice on Monday as originally expected. WR Will Blackwell (hamstring) did not practice for the third day in a row. Rookie G David Bobo left practice with a back injury and will have an MRI today.

The Post Gazette reports Pittsburgh Steelers FB Jon Witman was able to return to Friday afternoon's non-contact practice. Coach Bill Cowher said Witman will be held out of practice Saturday because the players will hit in full pads. WR Will Blackwell has not practiced the past two days because of a hamstring injury. Cowher said Blackwell's condition is improving each day.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports Pittsburgh Steelers WRs Chris Taylor, Will Blackwell, Demetrius Brown and Tim Baker are battling for what appears to be two roster spots at wide receiver. Blackwell appears to have an edge right now because he's had success as a special teams return man. The team likes Taylor's 4.34 speed, but he may have to impress them in the next few weeks to keep a roster spot with the team.

Gerry Dulac, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports for the Sporting News that the Pittsburgh Steelers are still looking for someone as their kick-return man. WR Will Blackwell had a score late in the season on a kick return but the team is still keeping their options open. CB/PR Hank Poteat was dangerous on punt returns a year ago and could add to his value if he can also become a kick returner.

The Tribune Review reports the Pittsburgh Steelers have made no attempt to restructure the contract of OC Dermontti Dawson and because of that his agent Ralph Cindrich thinks he won't be back with the team. WRs Courtney Hawkins and Will Blackwell, OT Shar Pourdanesh and OLB Mike Vrabel have not been offered new contracts by the team to this point. The team has been focused on the Dawson and RB Jerome Bettis' situations. They may still decided to bring Hawkins and Blackwell back. Blackwell's agent, Rocky Arceneaux, has had little contact with the Steelers in recent weeks. Bettis said the team is seeking a shorter term on his new contract while he and his agent, Lamont Smith, are hoping for a longer one. Long snapper, Mike Schneck, is an exclusive-rights free agent who will be back.

Gerry Dulac reports for the Sporting News the Pittsburgh Steelers have a decision to make on free agent WRs Courtney Hawkins and Will Blackwell for the 2001 season. It appears that neither will be re-signed, but if the team does decided to re-sign one of them it will probably be Blackwell. One player who could earn a roster spot in 2001 is Demetrius Brown, who spent a lot of time on the 2000 practice squad. He has good speed and size (6-2, 219). Coach Bill Cowher is expected to focus on the further development of #3 QB Tee Martin. The team may need Martin to step up to #2 QB if Kent Graham is not brought back. If Martin shows he is not ready they may need to hang on to Graham for at least another season.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports Pittsburgh Steelers RB Jerome Bettis plans to undergo arthroscopic knee surgery to repair damage behind his knee cap. WR Will Blackwell thought he'd only be able to be a restricted free agent due to only being on roster for five games, but he's been informed he'll be eligible for unrestricted status, meaning he can depart to any team he desires.

The Pittsburgh Post Gazette reports Pittsburgh Steelers WR Will Blackwell caught his first pass in more than a year. QB Kordell Stewart had a pass intercepted in the end zone, it was Stewart's first interception in three games. Because the team plays next Saturday, the players will have Monday off and work Tuesday, their normal day off.

Jim Wexell reports for Realpittsburgh.com that Steelers conditioning coach Chet Fuhrman was pleased with the Steelers conditioning at the team's recent minicamp. "This was a great off-season," he said. "We had a few guys who needed to step up and they really did." Among those Fuhrman praised were WR Will Blackwell and DBs Jason Simmons, Lance Brown and Deshea Townsend. TE Mark Bruener and RB Jerome Bettis were in top shape while LB Levon Kirkland was out of shape, and according to the article "aiming to be the league's first 300-pound LB." "We had a couple who could've done a better job, but, hey, the proof always shows up in training camp. And when we do the conditioning test, it'll show. But we still have  weeks until the season starts. Anybody who's not in shape now still has plenty of time."
