The team has been focused on the Dawson and RB Jerome Bettis' situations. They may still decided to bring Hawkins and Blackwell back. Blackwell's agent, Rocky Arceneaux, has had little contact with the Steelers in recent weeks. Bettis said the team is seeking a shorter term on his new contract while he and his agent, Lamont Smith, are hoping for a longer one. Steelers | WR Update | More

Sun, 11 Feb 2001 16:09:18 -0800

Gerry Dulac reports for the Sporting News the Pittsburgh Steelers have a decision to make on free agent WRs Courtney Hawkins and Will Blackwell for the 2001 season. It appears that neither will be re-signed, but if the team does decided to re-sign one of them it will probably be Blackwell. One player who could earn a roster spot in 2001 is Demetrius Brown, who spent a lot of time on the 2000 practice squad. He has good speed and size (6-2, 219). Coach Bill Cowher is expected to focus on the further development of #3 QB Tee Martin. The team may need Martin to step up to #2 QB if Kent Graham is not brought back. If Martin shows he is not ready they may need to hang on to Graham for at least another season.

Jim Wexell reports for Realpittsburgh.com that Steelers conditioning coach Chet Fuhrman was pleased with the Steelers conditioning at the team's recent minicamp. "This was a great off-season," he said. "We had a few guys who needed to step up and they really did." Among those Fuhrman praised were WR Will Blackwell and DBs Jason Simmons, Lance Brown and Deshea Townsend. TE Mark Bruener and RB Jerome Bettis were in top shape while LB Levon Kirkland was out of shape, and according to the article "aiming to be the league's first 300-pound LB." "We had a couple who could've done a better job, but, hey, the proof always shows up in training camp. And when we do the conditioning test, it'll show. But we still have [12] weeks until the season starts. Anybody who's not in shape now still has plenty of time."
