Bill Williamson, of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, reports Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Tice believes the team's running game is starting to improve. He said the emergence of newly signed FB Charles Stackhouse has helped ignite the running game, which is ranked No. 4 in the NFL. It was ranked No. 1 last season. Stackhouse, signed early last month after being waived by the Giants, plays in a two-back set the Vikings have used occasionally the past two games. Most of the time, the Vikings use a one-back offense.

Updating previous reports, Tara Sullivan, of the Bergen Record, reports the competition throughout the pre-season between FB Jim Finn and FB Charles Stackhouse for the one fullback spot on the roster has not provided a clear cut winner in the eyes of head coach Jim Fassel. "It doesn't make me happy when we're going into the season and [Finn] has a chance to prove himself and does that ( two penalties on special teams), but I like the guy," Fassel said. "[Stackhouse] was all right. Both of them had ups and downs and that's where they put the ball in my court, when neither one takes charge of the position."

"He just wanted me to know that he's sorry," Fassel said. "I said, `Stack, I'm trying to make an emphasis and I'm edgy about it. I don't want to see you get thrown out of the game.' Anytime somebody does that, I'm going to make an example of them, so at some point in time I can get it knocked off."

"I don't see how we keep both," Fassel said. "I like that I've got competition at the position, but they have competition from tight ends. If I was down in tight ends, I could keep two fullbacks."
