San Francisco 49ers DE Justin Smith (triceps) is slated for triceps surgery this week, and his recovery could last two or three months. He should be ready for Week 1, but the San Francisco 49ers might have to acquire more depth along their defensive front because of concerns over how many years the 33-year-old Smith has left to play. He ranks in the league's top four defensive linemen in total snaps logged over the past two seasons.
Fantasy Tip: That includes the postseason, where the Niners have advanced deeply in each of the past two years. Smith's IDP value would take a hit if he were forced to rotate snaps to conserve him, but his sack ability would still make him an attractive depth piece in leagues that heavily reward QB takedowns. San Fran may not perform as *the* top fantasy defense, but they're certainly still worth a starting spot.

Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers DT Justin Smith (triceps) has a tear of approximately 50 percent of his left triceps tendon. He confirmed he'll have surgery after Super Bowl XLVII. Smith also confirmed Wednesday, Jan. 30, that he will be back for the final year of the contract he signed with the team in 2008.
