Mark Maske, of the Washington Post, reports former Washington Redskins and Cincinnati Bengals WR Michael Westbrook could be facing an early retirement from the NFL. Westbrook isn't in a training camp after being released by the Cincinnati Bengals last November, and his agent, Stephen Zucker, said he isn't in negotiations with any team. "I think he'd like to play some more, but there's nothing doing so far," Zucker said.

He has been miffed about his playing time and asked the team to release him when he was inactive for the October 13 loss to Pittsburgh. "It was a combination that they gave up on me and my heart wasn’t in it," Westbrook said. "I don’t know if I’ll play again. For now, I’m just going home to laugh at the whole nightmare."

Bengals.com reports the Cincinnati Bengals plan to expand the role of WR Michael Westbrook. Offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski said he plans to expand Westbrook’s role this week in the effort to work him back into things. Westbrook's "fitting in" was slowed by his wrist injury. “He’s going to be more involved this week and we’ll see how he does,” said Bratkowski, who is hesitant to put rotation in stone. “Last week’s combination worked. Let’s see how it works this week. If Michael can stay healthy and continue to get reps, he’ll be fine. He’s still not comfortable with some of the little things in the offense, but we’ll keep his role limited and gradually open it up to give him the best chance to succeed.”

As it turns out, the Bengals don’t have a policy regarding inactive players staying around for games and many have left to go home and watch it on television. Steve Zucker, Westbrook’s agent, said his client has no desire to get released and said he only wants to play. If the Bengals cut him, they would absorb a relatively small $350,000 bonus on this year’s salary cap.

A specialist recommended he have a pin put in to correct the facture and surgery will take place on Tuesday morning. He’ll miss at least four weeks of action. He’ll meet with a hand specialist on Monday morning to determine whether or not he needs surgery. The broken navicular bone is a tricky injury, which could put him out of action 4 to 6 weeks if he needs surgery.
