Tommy Hicks, of the Mobile Register, reports former NFL WR Terance Mathis believes the NFL's current salary system unfairly pushes battle-tested veterans to the unemployed line prematurely. "After eight or nine years (of service), you have to pay some guys more, and some teams think that salary is too much," Mathis, a 13-year NFL veteran said. "Veteran players are being punished by the salary cap, and I think that's wrong. Guys 30-, 31-, 32- (years-old), now they're out of the league." Mathis was released by the Atlanta Falcons in 2002 due to his salary cap figure and played his final year with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the Pittsburgh Steelers have decided on which veteran free agent receiver they want and that man is former Falcons' WR Terance Mathis, who has reached a one-year deal with the team. Mathis will get a contract worth $775,000, which includes a $25,000 signing bonus.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review is reporting the Pittsburgh Steelers are this close to choosing between free agent wide receivers Herman Moore (Lions) and Terance Mathis (Falcons) for the open WR slot on the squad. Mathis, who led the Atlanta Falcons in receptions every season since 1994, visited the team Wednesday and was put through rigorous screening by team doctors. Both Moore and Mathis have indicated they are willing to play for the league-minimum $750,000 salary.

The Tribune Review reports the Pittsburgh Steelers will host a visit for free agent WR Terance Mathis (Falcons) next Wednesday. "He has caught a lot of balls," his agent Steve Zucker said. "He wants to get that ring." Coach Bill Cowher said Friday that talks with WR Herman Moore and Mathis are merely attempts to upgrade the team's depth at wide receiver.
