Updating previous reports, according to Joseph Duarte and Carlton Thompson, of the Houston Chronicle, the Houston Texans have released C Mike Newell (knee). Newell suffered a torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee during Saturday's scrimmage against the Dallas Cowboys and is out indefinitely.

Updating a previous report, Carlton Thompson, of the Houston Chronicle, reports Houston Texans C Mike Newell (knee) has torn the medial collateral ligament in his left knee. Originally believed to be a torn ACL, a torn MCL is a considerably less severe injury with a shorter recovery time. However, Newell is out indefinitely.

Carter Toole, of HoustonTexans.com, reports Houston Texans C Mike Newell (knee) suffered a knee sprain during the scrimmage game Saturday, August 2, against the Dallas Cowboys. The team fears Newell's injury may be serious. "We lost Mike Newell to possibly an ACL injury," head coach Dom Capers said.

The Houston Chronicle reports the following players will be held out of practice for the Houston Texans at training camp: OT Tony Boselli (shoulder surgery), DT Gary Walker (groin and hernia), WR Larry Davis (calf), OL Mike Newell (shoulder) and OL Calvin Collins (hamstring). Rookie TE Joey Knapp (food poisoning) will be re-evaluated Monday.

Houston Texans.com reports the team has signed the following free agents: DE Dorian Boose, WR Eric Chew, LB Troy Evans, S Toya Jones and C Mike Newell. Jones was with the 49ers in training camp before playing for Birmingham in the XFL and British Columbia in the Canadian Football League. Evans spent the 2001 season on the Rams practice squad. Newell spent two seasons on the Rams practice squad. Boose appeared in eight games last season for Washington. Chew originally signed with San Francisco as an undrafted free agent in 2000.

The Post-Dispatch reports the St. Louis Rams held seven-on-seven passing drills today and will do so again tomorrow for 18 mostly younger players. "I think they're excited about doing it," coach Mike Martz said. "It gives them a chance to be under a microscope, so to speak, in terms of what we do." Backup QBs Jamie Martin and Marc Bulger were among the offensive players on-hand. New starting LB Tommy Polley is part of the bye week practice group, as is RB Trung Canidate. All five practice squad players: WR Sherrod Gideon, C Mike Newell, S Nick Sorensen, newly signed LB Eugene McCaslin, and newly re-signed S Willie Gary are also participating.

The Post-Dispatch reports St. Louis Rams backup C Frank Garcia is expected to be sidelined at least two weeks with a hyperextended big toe he suffered in practice. "He got it over in pass-blocking drills," coach Mike Martz said. The team was waiting for X-ray results this morning to make sure Garcia doesn't have a fracture. Mike Newell becomes the team's backup center. Martz announced Wednesday that safeties Kim Herring (hamstring) and Adam Archuleta (hamstring); LBs Mark Fields (thigh) and London Fletcher (hamstring); and CB Aeneas Williams (back) will join QB Kurt Warner (precautionary) in sitting out the Kansas City pre-season game this week.
