Connell can't accept people thinking he's a thief. "I haven't done anything wrong," he says. Connell called last season's incident in New Orleans a "prank." "It was a prank," Connell said Friday. "It got blown out of proportion." He was accused of stealing from his teammate, RB Deuce McAllister. Connell said he gave the money back to McAllister each time, and that the two remain friends.

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports former New Orleans Saints WR Albert Connell had theft charges against him dropped following restitution being paid to Saints RB Deuce McAllister. It was alleged that Connell had stolen over $4,363 from McAllister, but Connell said all along it was just a prank. McAllister said he was repaid in December and apprised the district attorney that he wanted the charges against Connell dropped.

Jeff Duncan of the Times-Picayune reports for the Sporting News the New Orleans Saints are not expected to re-sign free agent CB Fred Weary. Also, CB Steve Israel, a bust since signing a $4.5-million deal in 2000, is expected to be released. WR Albert Connell and his off-the-field issues are all but gone and as previously reported QB Jeff Blake is also expected to be released.

The AP reports a decision whether felony charges will be filed against New Orleans Saints WR Albert Connell will be made in the next few weeks, a prosecutor said Tuesday. Connell was arrested and booked in December for allegedly stealing more than $4,000 from teammate Deuce McAllister. He faces up to 10 years in prison and a $3,000 fine if formally charged and convicted. Peter Schaffer, Connell's agent, refused to comment on Tuesday and said Connell would have no comment. Connell repaid the money taken from McAllister.

Updating an earlier story, John Clayton reports for ESPN New Orleans Saints WR Albert Connell surrendered Friday after authorities issued arrest warrants for two counts of alleged theft. Jefferson Parish Sheriff Harry Lee issued no other comment about the case. "We are fully aware of the circumstances surrounding this,’’ said his attorney, Peter Schaffer. "We’re completely confident he’s going to be exonerated. He’s looking forward to getting back to playing in the NFL and rooting for the Saints.’’

Associated Press reports two arrest warrants for New Orleans Saints WR Albert Connell were issued on Friday. He allegedly stole more than $4,000 from teammate Deuce McAllister. The first warrant alleges he took $863 from McAllister's locker, the second alleges he took $3,500 from McAllister's car. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and a $3,000 fine.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports New Orleans WR Albert Connell has indeed been suspended for the final four games of the year without pay by the team for conduct detrimental to the team. The Saints are talking with Connell and his agent about returning $1 million of his signing bonus. Connell reportedly was caught stealing from a teammate in the locker room.

As a follow up to previous reports, NewOrleansSaints.com reports GM Randy Mueller said on Thursday that WR Albert Connell won't play this weekend but he is still on the team's roster. Mueller isn't sure how everything's going to play out, but he said the team had had some discussions with Connell's agent this week. Mueller called the issues personal in nature so they'd remain "in house" and he doesn't plan to elaborate on them but said he would announce if something changed in Connell's status with the team. He noted he believes it's safe to say things may not work out this year, but once again they haven't crossed that bridge yet nor do they have a time table set on him. "I don't think that releasing him is an option," Mueller said, as salary cap issues would exist.

It was because the team dressed TE Cam Cleeland as their third tight end and Connell had a bad week of practice. After signing a five-year, $14 million deal with the Saints during the off-season, Connell is now no better than the fourth-best receiver on roster. "He was dizzy and just fell down. But he's going to be fine."

The Times Picayune reports New Orleans Saints CBs Steve Israel and Kevin Mathis and WR Albert Connell played for the first time this pre-season. Each played about 20 snaps and reported no major setbacks from their injuries. Mathis started at left corner and played four series in his first action since spraining his left knee during the first week of training camp. Connell, recovering from a hamstring problem, started and played most of the first half with the first- and second-team offense. He had one catch. Israel played most of the second and third quarters. WR Joe Horn (ribs) did not play. DT Norman Hand, DE Darren Howard and CB Fred Thomas along with RB Ricky Williams and OL Wally Williams sat out the game. All six are expected to be back for the season opener next Sunday.

"It's hot (90 degrees), but I'll get used to it. I'm a little bit out of shape because of my hamstring (injury)." Connell is happy with the quick tempo of practice and he is looking forward to the season and the winning attitude the team portrays.

He's made a few big plays, but has shown a tendency for dropping the ball in practice. Just as he was starting to turn things around, he suffered a hamstring injury during the final mini-camp.

The Times-Picayune's Jeff DeShazier reports WR Albert Connell's addition to the New Orleans Saints offense has the team excited about making their offense more potent than it was a year ago. Connell averaged 19.9 yards per catch last season and 18.3 the year before. Head coach Jim Haslett stated he feels Connell has all of the skills necessary to be an "All-Pro wideout."

Coach Jim Haslett and his staff are expecting 82 players to be on hand for the start of the mini-camp. Among the players who will be on hand are the Saints prize off-season free agent acquisitions, WR Albert Connell and FS Jay Bellamy. All seven players selected in the NFL draft last weekend will be on hand as well. Six players QB Jeff Blake (foot), MLB Charlie Clemons (Achilles' tendon), TE Cam Cleeland (Achilles tendon) and CB Fred Weary (ACL) are all recovering from surgery. FB Terrelle Smith, who had a herniated disc in his back, and LB Darrin Smith, who recently underwent surgery to repair a hernia will also sit it out.

Jeff Duncan reports for the Times Picayune that New Orleans Saints GM Randy Mueller places a high premium on speedy players. During the off-season, Mueller addressed some of the speed concerns the team has by signing WR Albert Connell and S Jay Bellamy. Now, in the upcoming NFL Draft, the Saints are likely to try and add more speedy players to the team. Mueller stated he'd like to see more speed at the RB and WR positions.
