Vikings | Childress has big expectations for Wiggins

Tue, 22 Aug 2006 17:12:46 -0700

Dave Campbell, of the Associated Press, reports it has not taken Minnesota Vikings TE Jermaine Wiggins to re-establish himself with the team's new coaching staff. "I have a greater appreciation for him right now than when I took this job," head coach Brad Childress said. "He has a way of wiggling open," Childress said. "He understands defense. He understands working zones and obviously has very good hands." With WR Koren Robinson's future in doubt, the Vikings are without player they paid to be their leading receiver. Wiggins, though, is really the top target for QB Brad Johnson. Tight ends have traditionally been an integral part of West Coast-style offences, which the Vikings now use under Childress. Wiggins has never been short on confidence and never shy about lobbying for the ball. Even with the new staff, he hasn't had to change his approach.

Vikings | Tight ends may still hit the field together

Sun, 30 Jul 2006 20:13:36 -0700

Don Seeholzer, of the Pioneer Press, reports the Minnesota Vikings have traded in their two-tight end offense for a West Coast scheme, but offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell said TEs Jermaine Wiggins and Jim Kleinsasser still will be on the field together at times. "Jim's kind of been pigeonholed as our blocker, and Wiggins has been pigeonholed as our pass receiver," Bevell said. "I think we're going to make them both more well-rounded players. We'll let Jim go out and catch a pass every now and then. We'll have Wiggins standing out there and blocking on the end. And that will keep us more balanced offensively."

Vikings | Some teammates opposed to trading Culpepper

Wed, 22 Feb 2006 19:20:48 -0800

Sean Jensen, of the Pioneer Press, reports some Minnesota Vikings players are opposed to the idea of trading QB Daunte Culpepper. OT Bryant McKinnie said, "That's crazy. I don't agree with trading him. Last year, they traded Randy Moss. We already made one mistake (trading Moss). Don't do it twice. If that's the case, let me go." CB Antoine Winfield said Culpepper was the reason he turned down an offer from the New York Jets two years ago to sign with the Vikings. TE Jermaine Wiggins said that he and other players are frustrated by the trade speculation surrounding Culpepper.

Vikings | No Clear No. 1 Wide Receiver; Short Passes in Order?

Wed, 21 Sep 2005 18:57:32 -0700

Bob Sansevere, of the Pioneer Press, reports with Minnesota Vikings WR Nate Burleson (knee) expected to miss the team's Week 3 game the team does not have a solid No. 1 wide receiver. "I can't tell you who'll be our No. 1 receiver until we start playing the game,'' Vikings head coach Mike Tice said. Tice called WR Travis Taylor his "most consistent receiver," and a team-leading 10 catches backs that up. He isn't the deep threat Burleson is, but the Vikings still can get by without the long pass - if QB Daunte Culpepper adapts. Culpepper needs to avoid turnovers and rebuild his confidence and the quickest way for him to rebuild it is to complete passes and move the chains. That means throwing short, high-percentage passes to RB Mewelde Moore and TE Jermaine Wiggins.
