Cardinals | Still looking for veteran catcher

Fri, 29 Jan 2016 04:55:39 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak is looking for options behind the plate to complement C Yadier Molina and C Brayan Pena.

Fantasy Tip: Molina may not be ready for Opening Day and Pena is little more than a backup that can be pressed into starting duty for a few weeks. The club needs more help, so monitor who the Cardinals get.

Cardinals | Yadier Molina update

Sat, 16 Jan 2016 16:40:40 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals C Yadier Molina (thumb) will have his left thumb in a hard cast until mid-February. The biggest unknowns are related to strength, as the Cardinals won't know how Molina's left thumb responded to a second surgery until it's free from that cast. Instead of catching bullpen sessions and getting his swing in tune, Molina will spend the early days of Spring Training building strength. They're still cautiously optimistic he can return by the season opener April 3.

Fantasy Tip: Molina has entered his fantasy decline, but the position isn't booming with upper-level talent. He's a midrange option at the position.

Cardinals | Yadier Molina needs more surgery

Wed, 16 Dec 2015 12:41:53 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals C Yadier Molina (thumb) needed a second surgery on his thumb ligament Tuesday, Dec. 15, and he'll now be out for most of spring training next year.

Fantasy Tip: At this point in Molina's career, you have to start considering that he's a better real-life commodity than a fantasy one. He hit .270 last season but had just four home runs and 61 RBI in 136 games. Injuries the last few seasons have taken a toll on his production, and the power is unlikely to return at this point.

St. Louis Cardinals C Yadier Molina (thumb) will have surgery Thursday, Oct. 15, and will need eight to 12 weeks to recover. He should be ready for spring training.

Fantasy Tip: Molina will be a midrange catcher option in traditional leagues, but his decline has begun as he turns 34 next season.

Cardinals | Yadier Molina scratched

Tue, 13 Oct 2015 10:56:55 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals C Yadier Molina (thumb) was scratched from the Game 4 lineup Tuesday, Oct. 13, with C Tony Cruz hitting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Cruz ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) is not a potent enough weapon to use on FantasyScore against Jason Hammel.

Tue, 13 Oct 2015 10:25:16 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals C Yadier Molina (thumb) is back in the lineup for Game 4 of the Division Series hitting eighth Tuesday, Oct. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Molina ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) hasn't looked comfortable swinging the bat and isn't a good choice on FantasyScore against Jason Hammel.

Cardinals | Yadier Molina hitless in return

Sat, 10 Oct 2015 00:56:21 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals C Yadier Molina (thumb) was 0-for-3 in his return to active duty Friday, Oct. 9, in Game 1 of the National League Division Series.

Fantasy Tip: Molina ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) didn't look uncomfortable at the plate, but keep in mind he is wearing a splint and could be hampered when hitting. He may provide strong defense, but look elsewhere for your catching for now.

Cardinals | Yadier Molina returns to action

Fri, 09 Oct 2015 10:56:33 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals C Yadier Molina (thumb) is catching and hitting seventh in Game 1 of the division series against Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester Friday, Oct. 9.

Fantasy Tip: It's really hard to say how Molina ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) will perform this postseason following a serious thumb injury that has kept him sidelined since Sept. 20. Last year a similar ailment kept him hitless all postseason, so there is plenty of reason to avoid him in daily leagues, at least in these first few games to see how he looks.

Cardinals | Yadier Molina likely playing hurt

Thu, 08 Oct 2015 14:07:18 -0700

Updating a previous report, St. Louis Cardinals C Yadier Molina (thumb) will wear a molded plastic brace during the National League Division Series to protect a torn ligament in his left thumb, and manager Mike Matheny believes Molina is playing through pain.

Fantasy Tip: Molina's ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) defense is what has him on the 25-man roster for the series, and anything he does offensively will certainly be viewed as a bonus. Reiterating a previous tip, FantasyScore players should view the backstop as an extremely risky buy for contests.

Cardinals | Yadier Molina makes NLDS roster

Thu, 08 Oct 2015 12:23:10 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals C Yadier Molina (thumb) was included on the 25-man roster for the National League Division Series against the Chicago Cubs. Molina was third in the league in defensive runs saved among catchers this season.

Fantasy Tip: Molina ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) is more glove than stick these days, as he posted his lowest OPS (.660) since the 2006 season this year. FantasyScore players should view Molina as a low-end catcher option for contests, and providing cap relief may be his biggest asset, especially considering the nature of the injury he is attempting to play through.
