Free-agent C Bengie Molina (Rangers) is expected to make his retirement announcement official soon. Friends, family and former teammates threw him a surprise retirement party in Arizona. "It was a special night," Molina said. "I can't thank enough all the people that came. At some point they touched my life and helped me be who I am right now." Molina will hang up the spikes after batting .274 over parts of 13 major league seasons playing with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Toronto Blue Jays, San Francisco Giants and Texas Rangers. He and brothers Jose Molina and Yadier Molina are the only trio of brothers to own World Series rings.

Updating an earlier report, the Tampa Bay Rays signed C Jose Molina to a one-year deal that guarantees him $1.5 million in 2012. He has a $1.5 million club option for 2013 with a $300,000 buyout.

The Toronto Blue Jays offered arbitration to 2B Kelly Johnson (Type A), RP Frank Francisco (Type B), RP Jon Rauch (Type B) and C Jose Molina (Type B). They declined to offer arbitration to RP Shawn Camp. Under the new CBA, Johnson became a modified Type-A free agent, which means teams will no longer be forced to part with a top draft pick to acquire him.

The Tampa Bay Rays are likely to finalize a one-year deal in the $1 million range with free-agent C Jose Molina (Blue Jays) at some point this weekend or early next week. Molina will serve in a platoon situation with either Cs John Jaso or Jose Lobaton.
