Boston Red Sox OF Darnell McDonald (oblique) will play in rehab games for Triple-A Pawtucket Sunday, May 27, and Monday, May 28, and could be activated from the disabled list as early as Tuesday, May 29. He was given the day off Saturday, May 26.

The Boston Red Sox have placed OF Darnell McDonald (oblique) on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right oblique. The move is retroactive to Saturday, May 12. In a corresponding move, the team has purchased the contract of 1B Mauro Gomez from Triple-A Pawtucket.

With Boston Red Sox OF Jacoby Ellsbury (shoulder) possibly out for an extended period, the team will turn to OFs Darnell McDonald, Cody Ross and Ryan Sweeney to pick up the slack. Each of the three healthy outfielders has previous experience in center field. Ross moved from right field to center Friday, April 13, when Ellsbury departed. Ross has made 345 of 632 career starts in the middle of the outfield.

The Boston Red Sox signed Ps Michael Bowden, Drake Britton, Christopher Carpenter, Felix Doubront, Mark Melancon, Clayton Mortensen, Stolmy Pimentel and Junichi Tazawa, Cs Luis Exposito and Ryan Lavarnway, INFs Lars Anderson, Will Middlebrooks and Oscar Tejeda and OFs Ryan Kalish, Che-Hsuan Lin and Darnell McDonald to one-year deals for the 2012 season Friday, March 9. The team will pay all of them the league minimum at $480,000.

Boston Red Sox OF Cody Ross is likely to start in left field to open the season with OF Carl Crawford (wrist) unlikely to be ready. OF Darnell McDonald is another candidate. When Crawford comes back, Ross and OF Ryan Sweeney will compete for time in right field.
