Thu, 22 Dec 2011 07:43:51 -0800 Former NFL players Jamal Lewis, Dorsey Levens, Fulton Kuykendall and Ryan Stewart say in a federal lawsuit that brain injuries have left them struggling with medical problems years after their playing days ended. The players filed the lawsuit against the National Football League and FNL Properties LLC this week in U.S. District Court in Atlanta. The players maintain the NFL knew as early as the 1920s of the potential for concussions to harm its players. They argue the league concealed the dangers from coaches, trainers, players and the public until June 2010, when it publicly acknowledged the health threats and warned players and teams.

General manager Ted Thompson confirmed the transaction late Thursday afternoon, June 1, through a team spokesman.

With Buckhalter sidelined, the Eagles do not have a tailback taller than 5-foot-10 or heavier than 212 pounds. One possible replacement for Buckhalter could be free agent RB Dorsey Levens, who has had two previous stints with the Eagles.

Bringing him back later would allow them to pay him on a week-to-week basis and release him without a salary cap penalty. With injuries at linebacker, the Eagles were forced to keep seven on the active roster and that helped make Levens expendable entering Week 1.

Levens is slated to leave for Philadelphia Sunday, Aug. 22, and sign a contract with them according to the report. The Eagles have declined to comment on the situation. Levens, 34, spent 2002 with the Eagles, managing 411 yards rushing on 75 carries and one touchdown while also catching 19 passes for 124 yards and a touchdown.

He already has an important role because of his value as a return specialist and cover man on special teams, abilities neither Giants RB Ron Dayne nor Dorsey Levens possess. By proving to Giants head coach Jim Fassel he also can function on offense, Joyce made the coach's decision easier. "I just needed to look at who the next-most productive guy is and at that point in time, it doesn't matter where they were drafted, how long they've been with us, or what money they make," Fassel said. "It's the best guy who's going to play. You can't argue with his production. He's looked extremely good on the run, pass, pass protection, and return ability."
