Braves | Jason Heyward activated

Fri, 17 May 2013 12:20:48 -0700

The Atlanta Braves activated OF Jason Heyward (appendix) from the 15-day disabled list Friday, May 17, and placed RP Jordan Walden (shoulder) on the DL with right shoulder inflammation.

Fantasy Tip: Get Heyward back into your lineups as soon as possible. His return takes whatever fleeting value Reed Johnson and Jordan Schafer had in NL-only leagues. It might be tougher to get Evan Gattis into the lineup now, too.

Braves | Jason Heyward could return later this week

Mon, 13 May 2013 15:47:12 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Jason Heyward (appendix) won't join the team in Arizona this week, but he could be ready to come off the disabled list Friday, May 17.

Fantasy Tip: The Braves are clearly giving Heyward plenty of time to recover from his appendectomy. You'll have to wait another week to put him in your weekly lineups. Reed Johnson and Jordan Schafer will go back to reserve duties when Heyward returns.

Braves | Jason Heyward plays rehab game

Thu, 09 May 2013 14:14:55 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Jason Heyward (appendix) was the designated hitter for Triple-A Gwinnett Thursday, May 9, and he went 0-for-5 with three strikeouts and a walk while playing all nine innings. It's assumed that he'll stay on his rehab assignment this weekend.

Fantasy Tip: It's unclear how long Heyward's rehab stint will last, but he is getting pretty close to returning to the team and putting Jordan Schafer and Reed Johnson out of regular roles in a platoon situation in right field.

Braves | Jason Heyward to begin rehab assignment

Wed, 08 May 2013 11:33:30 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Jason Heyward (appendix) will play with Triple-A Gwinnett Thursday, May 9, and he will also play this weekend. It's unclear how long his rehab assignment will last, but he took batting practice for the third day in a row Wednesday, May 8, and also did some running.

Fantasy Tip: This is definitely good news for Heyward owners. If he doesn't have a setback this weekend, it's very possible that Heyward could be activated from the disabled list and return to action next week. Jordan Schafer, Reed Johnson and even Evan Gattis will lose considerable playing time when Heyward returns. Gattis is the biggest loser for fantasy owners, but Fredi Gonzalez will attempt to find time for him whenever he can. If you have other needs in mixed leagues, we wouldn't blame you if you dropped Gattis.

Braves | Jason Heyward working his way back

Thu, 02 May 2013 16:37:12 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Jason Heyward (appendix) has been walking on a treadmill and riding a stationary bike for the last two days and is feeling much better. He's now hoping he'll return sooner than late May, and he's hoping to start taking dry swings Saturday, May 4, two days ahead of when he was scheduled to start baseball activities. He could add some catch and light running. "Everybody is telling me to take my time," Heyward said. "You'll know (when you're ready), but it's still not something to rush. You can end up having a hernia or oblique strain."

Fantasy Tip: The end of May still seems like a realistic target date to expect Heyward to return after undergoing an appendectomy. The Braves have no reason to rush him back this early in the season. Jordan Schafer and Reed Johnson will continue platooning in right field in the meantime.

Thu, 25 Apr 2013 11:39:58 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Jason Heyward (appendix) was released from the hospital Wednesday, April 24, after undergoing an appendectomy Monday, April 22.

Fantasy Tip: Heyward is expected to be fully ready to come off the disabled list when he's eligible in two weeks. In the meantime, Reed Johnson and Jordan Schafer will platoon in right field for those of you looking for a short-term outfield fix in NL-only leagues.

Braves | Justin Upton will stay put

Tue, 23 Apr 2013 11:54:17 -0700

Braves | Jordan Schafer, Reed Johnson could see time

Tue, 23 Apr 2013 11:11:07 -0700

Atlanta Braves OFs Jordan Schafer and Reed Johnson could see playing time in right field with OF Jason Heyward (appendix) on the disabled list. The team also has the option of moving OF Justin Upton from left field to right field. C Evan Gattis could also play left field, but it's unlikely Atlanta will ask Gattis to play left field in Coors Field this week.

Fantasy Tip: Gattis clearly gives Atlanta the most offensive upside over Schafer and Johnson, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see them try to get his bat in the lineup any way possible. Schafer should be your first target over Johnson in NL leagues if Atlanta doesn't move Gattis to left. Stay tuned.
