The Toronto Blue Jays avoided arbitration with 2B Kelly Johnson and OF Ben Francisco by signing them both to one-year contracts Tuesday, Jan. 17. Johnson will make $6.375 million and Francisco will earn $1,537,500 in 2012.

The Toronto Blue Jays offered arbitration to 2B Kelly Johnson (Type A), RP Frank Francisco (Type B), RP Jon Rauch (Type B) and C Jose Molina (Type B). They declined to offer arbitration to RP Shawn Camp. Under the new CBA, Johnson became a modified Type-A free agent, which means teams will no longer be forced to part with a top draft pick to acquire him.

The Detroit Tigers will be searching for a leadoff man this offseason because they know OF Austin Jackson isn't the long-term answer there. Free-agent SS Jose Reyes (Mets) would be their dream candidate in the spot, but free-agent OF David DeJesus (Athletics) and 2B Kelly Johnson (Blue Jays) are other options.

The Toronto Blue Jays are expected to offer salary arbitration to 2B Kelly Johnson this winter, and Johnson is in line to see a raise over the $5.85 million he received this season. Johnson is a Type-B free agent, meaning the Blue Jays would receive compensation in the draft if he heads to another team.
