After being switched to the No. 2 spot in the lineup Wednesday, May 2, Toronto Blue Jays SS Yunel Escobar has gone 5-for-9 with two runs scored. The shortstop was off to a slow start and flip-flopped spots with 2B Kelly Johnson, who is leading the team with a .391 on-base percentage.

Toronto Blue Jays 3B Edwin Encarnacion blasted a three-run home run, his ninth of the season, in a winning effort Wednesday, May 2. 2B Kelly Johnson also added a two-run smash in the game. Johnson now has six home runs on the season.

Toronto Blue Jays manager John Farrell used 2B Kelly Johnson as his leadoff hitter for the third consecutive game Saturday, March 24, with SS Yunel Escobar batting second. However, this does not necessarily signal a permanent change to the batting order. "Yunel's inside-out swing is conducive for a hit and run," Farrell said. "Kelly is an all-fields type of hitter. That's not the only prerequisite or factor that would be considered in who'll hit second. There's nothing that's imminent to say that this is where we're going to be come Opening Day, but I think we just want to give it a little bit more opportunity here in camp."

The Toronto Blue Jays used a batting order in their intrasquad game Friday, March 3, and their Grapefruit League opener Saturday, March 4, which is expected to look like their Opening Day lineup. SS Yunel Escobar served as the leadoff hitter, followed by 2B Kelly Johnson, OF Jose Bautista, DH Adam Lind, 1B Edwin Encarnacion, OF Colby Rasmus and 3B Brett Lawrie. OF Eric Thames or OF Travis Snider will bat eighth, depending on who wins the left field job. C J.P. Arencibia will serve as the No. 9 hitter.

The Toronto Blue Jays avoided arbitration with 2B Kelly Johnson and OF Ben Francisco by signing them both to one-year contracts Tuesday, Jan. 17. Johnson will make $6.375 million and Francisco will earn $1,537,500 in 2012.
