"It's very close as evidenced in the way they played the other night against the Jets," Saints offensive coordinator Mike McCarthy said. "We're trying to split Lamar and Ki-Jana right down the middle in reps. We're trying to give them an equal opportunity to win the job."

Chris Pika, of NewOrleansSaints.com, reports New Orleans Saints RB Ki-Jana Carter had a solid performance in the pre-season finale against the Miami Dolphins. Carter rushed 25 times for 94 yards and caught three passes for 26 yards. "The only thing I can do when I go out there is to give 100 percent," said Carter. "There were probably some plays that I could have done better on, but I need to show the coaches that they can trust me when they call my number."

Brian Allee-Walsh, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports the New Orleans Saints will take a long look at reserve RB Ki-Jana Carter in the Thursday, Aug. 28 pre-season game against the Miami Dolphins. Carter gained 31 yards in limited work against the San Francisco 49ers in the Saturday, Aug. 23 pre-season game. "I would like to see him run some," Haslett said. "He did a pretty good job the other day, but I want to see him against some better players. We will put him in against the Miami starters and see how he does."

Carter, who was originally the first overall selection in the 1995 draft by the Cincinnati Bengals, has not played since the 2001 season with the Washington Redskins.

Updating an earlier story, Jeff Duncan reports for the Times Picayune the New Orleans Saints plan to bring in free agent Terry Allen (Ravens) for a visit Monday. They also had a visit planned for Ki-Jana Carter, but he signed with Green Bay last week. "We just want to take a look at them and see if they can help us," Saints coach Jim Haslett said. "We'd like to add a veteran running back before training camp, if it's possible." The team reportedly has discussed a deal for Buffalo RB Shawn Bryson. The asking price for Bryson is believed to be a third-round draft pick.
