The AP reports former NFL QB Eric Zeier has decided to retire from the NFL to pursue a career as a mortgage lender. He recently played in the Arena League during the league's pre-season.

As an update to previous stories, ESPN reports ex-NFL QB Eric Zeier left the Arena Football League's Georgia Force on Tuesday for what was described as "an NFL opportunity." His opportunity probably will not be determined until after this weekend's NFL draft. Representatives for Zeier said the QB would not have abandoned his Arena league experiment without some indications that he will be in an NFL training camp this summer. Re-signing with the Atlanta Falcons could be a possiblility.

Updating previous reports, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports former NFL QB Eric Zeier hasn't ruled out a return to the NFL. Zeier is currently playing in the Arena league. He said if the phone calls come, he'll have to be ready. However, he's also tempered his expectations to realize he has to move on should the phone not ring with NFL teams on the other end.

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the Carolina Panthers will have free agent QB Eric Zeier in for a workout on Tuesday. He flew into Charlotte this evening. The Panthers have also contacted free agent QB Jim Harbaugh as well as worked out a pair of younger QBs, including Mike Van Raaphorst.

The Boston Globe reports that the team decided not to sign either QBs Billy Joe Tolliver or Eric Zeier. The team will go with WR Bert Emanuel as it's third string QB. Emanuel was a QB at Rice. NT Jace Sayler (knee) has had a knee problem for a while and is the back up to Richard Seymour (leg) who has a leg injury. If C Damien Woody (neck) can't play, look for Grey Ruegamer to play in his place.

Pat Yasinskas reports for the Charlotte Observer Carolina Panthers coach George Seifert will announce on Monday his starting QB for the team's opening game. Barring any unforseen circumstances, it will be rookie Chris Weinke. Dameyune Craig and Matt Lytle are the other quarterbacks on the roster and Seifert said the Panthers have no plans to bring in another quarterback. One QB that could intrigue the team is Eric Zeier, released by the Falcons. "Right now, I would say that we're set," Seifert said. "In any position in football, you always evaluate. But I would say right now these are our quarterbacks."

AtlantaFalcons.com reports the team has released WR Eugene Baker, FB Kevin McLeod, TE Dallas Neil, PK Jake Arians, DT Ron Moore, T/G Wes Shivers and T Paul Snellings, and rookies DE Randy Garner, S Corey Hall and WR Shawn Mills. They reached an injury settlement with CB Elijah Williams and waived/injured LB Corey Atkins. They also placed LB Jeff Kelly on injured reserve. Of course as previously reported, they released QB Eric Zeier to get to the 53-man roster limit.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports the Atlanta Falcons are trying to move either of their backup QBs, Doug Johnson or Eric Zeier via a trade today. Several teams are reportedly interested in acquiring an experienced quarterback, including Carolina, Buffalo, Detroit, Dallas and Cincinnati. Falcons officials spoke Saturday with representatives with several other teams. When coach Dan Reeves was asked if he would trade Zeier or Johnson to the Panthers even though Carolina is in the same division as the Falcons, he said yes. Johnson may be the preferred choice of coaches as Atlanta's No. 3 QB behind Chris Chandler and rookie Michael Vick.

Geoff Hobson reports for Bengals.com QB Scott Mitchell said he'll be back in less than four weeks from his ankle injury. Bengals trainer Paul Sparling, who has already ruled Mitchell out of the regular-season opener in 10 days with the high ankle sprain, says four to eight weeks. Due to Mitchell's situation, the team may look to add a fourth QB. The Bengals were in touch Friday with the agent for QB Scott Covington, whom they released earlier. They may also scan the waiver wire or look for a trade. The Steelers are shopping Kent Graham and Eric Zeier is on the bubble in Atlanta.

The Associated Press reports the Atlanta Falcons routed the Tampa Bay Buccaneeers 36-7 Friday night. The Falcons are not getting big heads about their great pre-season performance. "I think we'll be a better ballclub, let's just leave it at that," coach Dan Reeves said. "You've got to keep the pre-season in perspective." RB Maurice Smith rushed 12 times for 89 yards and scored a pair of TDs. He may have locked up the No. 2 RB job. Another contender, Rodney Thomas, gained 68 yards on 18 carries. The Falcons outrushed the Bucs 211-86. In the battle for No. 3 QB, Eric Zeier was 4-for-5 for 20 yards, while Doug Johnson completed both of his passes for 26 yards. Rookie Michael Vick was 4-of-8 passing for 37 yards and thrilled the Georgia Dome crowd with a 21-yard run.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports the Atlanta Falcons have stated QB Chris Chandler remains the No. 1 on their QB depth chart despite the probable addition of QB Michael Vick later today. Chandler reportedly was not overly thrilled about the team acquiring the rights to Vick. When asked for his reaction to the Falcons move, Chandler declined to comment. "Chris is our quarterback," coach Dan Reeves said. "He's our starting quarterback and I think that's a great situation for Michael, to be able to learn under a veteran guy that's been in the league for a long time." There is some speculation Chandler could be released this spring or early summer. Then, the role of tutoring Vick would fall to Eric Zeier, who would become the starter.

In a question and answer session on the team's official site, Atlanta Falcons GM Harold Richardson said it was doubtful the team would pursue free agent WR Tony Martin, despite earlier reports. He said the team had absolutely no plans to trade RB Jamal Anderson. He also felt newly acquired QB Eric Zeier will be a valuable asset to the Falcons, but he did not discuss in which capacity. Right now expectations are Zeier will be the No. 2 QB behind Chris Chandler.

The Tampa Bay Tribune reports the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been quite impressed with new-comer QB Eric Zeier thus far. He's looked very sharp in the times he's participated and has been a mainstay in workouts at the facilities ... and it's not because he's told to, it's because he wants to. QB coach Clyde Christensen has been working with him and has been very happy with what he's seen so far.
