The AP reports former NFL QB Eric Zeier has decided to retire from the NFL to pursue a career as a mortgage lender. He recently played in the Arena League during the league's pre-season.

As an update to previous stories, ESPN reports ex-NFL QB Eric Zeier left the Arena Football League's Georgia Force on Tuesday for what was described as "an NFL opportunity." His opportunity probably will not be determined until after this weekend's NFL draft. Representatives for Zeier said the QB would not have abandoned his Arena league experiment without some indications that he will be in an NFL training camp this summer. Re-signing with the Atlanta Falcons could be a possiblility.

Updating previous reports, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports former NFL QB Eric Zeier hasn't ruled out a return to the NFL. Zeier is currently playing in the Arena league. He said if the phone calls come, he'll have to be ready. However, he's also tempered his expectations to realize he has to move on should the phone not ring with NFL teams on the other end.

The Atlanta Journal Consititution reports former NFL QB Eric Zeier is now the starting QB for the Georgia Force of the Arena Football League. Former Falcons backup QB Tony Graziani is now starting for the Los Angeles Avengers. Former NFL QB Glenn Foley starts for the New Jersey Gladiators.

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the Carolina Panthers will have free agent QB Eric Zeier in for a workout on Tuesday. He flew into Charlotte this evening. The Panthers have also contacted free agent QB Jim Harbaugh as well as worked out a pair of younger QBs, including Mike Van Raaphorst.

Dan Pires, of the New Bedford Standard Times, has informed KFFL that the New England Patriots may bring in veteran QB Eric Zeier to serve as their third quarterback.

The Boston Globe reports that the team decided not to sign either QBs Billy Joe Tolliver or Eric Zeier. The team will go with WR Bert Emanuel as it's third string QB. Emanuel was a QB at Rice. NT Jace Sayler (knee) has had a knee problem for a while and is the back up to Richard Seymour (leg) who has a leg injury. If C Damien Woody (neck) can't play, look for Grey Ruegamer to play in his place.

Jay Glazer reports for SportsLine.com the New England Patriots also brought in free agent QB Billy Joe Tolliver on Tuesday night for a workout. As reported, the team also brought in former Falcons QB Eric Zeier. Both QBs are in New England this morning.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports former Atlanta Falcons QB Eric Zeier worked out for the New England Patriots on Tuesday. The team may want to add a QB depending on how much time the injured Drew Bledsoe will really miss.

Pat Yasinskas reports for the Charlotte Observer Carolina Panthers coach George Seifert will announce on Monday his starting QB for the team's opening game. Barring any unforseen circumstances, it will be rookie Chris Weinke. Dameyune Craig and Matt Lytle are the other quarterbacks on the roster and Seifert said the Panthers have no plans to bring in another quarterback. One QB that could intrigue the team is Eric Zeier, released by the Falcons. "Right now, I would say that we're set," Seifert said. "In any position in football, you always evaluate. But I would say right now these are our quarterbacks."
