NFL | Mitchell Looking for a Chance

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports former Cincinnati Bengals QB Scott Mitchell, a unrestricted free agent, continues to work out in Florida with hopes of some NFL team calling later this summer to give him a chance to come in as an experienced backup. Mitchell, 34, said he talked with Chicago, Arizona and Indianapolis during the off-season but nothing came about of the talks. He's been maintaining his playing weight of 240 pounds.

NFL | WWU Prospect Hopes to Get Call on Draft Day

According to the Seattle Times, Western Washington QB Scott Mitchell has a good chance of being selected in the NFL Draft this weekend. He'd be the first WWU player since DL Dave Weedman was taken in the 12th round in 1968. If Mitchell doesn't get picked during the seven-round draft, he'll likely be brought in as a rookie free agent. Mitchell threw for 2,778 yards and 25 TDs and has been praised for his mobility and decision-making skills. The Falcons, Bengals and Giants have been among the teams most interested in him.

Cardinals | Mitchell Interest Wanes

The Arizona Republic reports the Arizona Cardinals apparently are no longer interested in signing free agent QB Scott Mitchell (Bengals). The team reportedly contacted Mitchell's agent, but they are now expected to find a third quarterback elsewhere.

Updating an earlier story, the Charlotte Observer reports the Carolina Panthers have contacted agent Tony Agnone about free agent QB Scott Mitchell (Bengals). Coach John Fox has talked to Mitchell, but no offer has been made. As noted, Arizona has some interest as well and so do the Chicago Bears, according to Agnone.

Bengals | Mitchell Update

Geoff Hobson reports for Bengals.com the team has not made any final decision regarding free agent QB Scott Mitchell. The team continues to suggest they will find their third quarterback in April's NFL Draft. The Bengals are keeping an eye on Illinois QB Kurt Kittner as a possible second-round choice and others as well including Rohan Davey of LSU. Team President Mike Brown did acknowledge Monday that QB Akili Smith's torn hamstring has muddied Mitchell's situation, but all signs point to the Bengals going to training camp without him.

Bengals | Kitna Likely Starter in 2002

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports QB Jon Kitna appears to be the likely starting quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals at the start of the 2002 season. QB Akili Smith (hamstring) has a long road ahead of him in recovering from a torn hamstring and the club is unlikely to re-sign QB Scott Mitchell, who is a free agent.

Cincinnati Bengals QB Scott Mitchell (ribs) will be the No. 2 QB this weekend according to ESPN's John Clayton. DE Vaughn Booker (hip), CB Artrell Hawkins (shoulder) and G Matt O'Dwyer (knee) are all expected to play after being able to practice Friday.

Bengals.com's Geoff Hobson reports Cincinnati Bengals CB Artrell Hawkins (shoulder) practiced on Thursday with light contact. He's still questionable for this weekend's game. QB Scott Mitchell (ribs) took more snaps on Thursday and he may be able to be active this weekend. LG Matt O'Dwyer (knee) practiced again Thursday. H-back Nick Williams (calf) aggravated his calf on Wednesday and missed Thursday's practice, while FB Lorenzo Neal (cold) missed his second day in a row of action.
