MLB.com's Bill Ladson reports free agent 1B Wil Cordero is open to returning to the Montreal Expos in 2004. He made $600,000 in 2003, but is also interested in playing fulltime as an everyday player. According to Cordero's agent, Jeffrey Moorad, Expos general manager Omar Minaya and his assistant, Tony Siegle, told Moorad at the GM meetings in Phoenix earlier in the month that the Expos hadn't received their 2004 budget yet from Major League Baseball and would get back to Moorad later to negotiate a contract. "I would like to be back," said Cordero. "But that's not my decision. I'm going to do what's best for me and my family. I want to be an everyday player."

Updating a previous item, the AP’s Josh Dubow reports Tampa Bay Devil Rays IF/OF Jeff Liefer had been earlier waived by the Montreal Expos after failing to beat out Expos 1B Wil Cordero for the first base job. He hit only .193 with three home runs and 18 RBI in 35 games with Montreal before being claimed off waivers by the Devil Rays on Friday. ''I hoped we would get more production from him,'' Expos general manager Omar Minaya said. ''We knew going in that it was a competition between Cordero and Liefer. At the end of the day, Cordero did much better.'' Liefer was one of three players, including SP Orlando Hernandez and RP Rocky Biddle, who had been obtained from the Chicago White Sox in a trade last year in return for SP Bartolo Colon.
