The Green Bay Packers have named Kurt Schottenheimer their new defensive backs coach. He joins the Packers from the coaching staff of the St. Louis Rams.

Nick Wagoner, of StLouisRams.com, reports St. Louis Rams secondary coach Kurt Schottenheimer says the competition at safety should be one of the most intense battles of training camp. "I want guys who have a chance to play in the National Football League and we are acquiring those types of players," Schottenheimer said. "We are trying to get as much competition in that area as we possibly can." As reported, SS Michael Stone, CB Michael Hawthorne, FS O.J. Atogwe, and FS Jerome Carter are all expected to try and earn the starting safety spot alongside FS Adam Archuleta.

Pete Dougherty, of PackersNews.com, reports the St. Louis Rams have hired Kurt Schottenheimer as their new defensive backs coach. Schottenheimer signed a three-year deal with the club, according to Bob McGinn, of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Schottenheimer had served the same position with the Green Bay Packers last season before he was jettisoned last week.

Updating a previous report, Packers.com reports the Green Bay Packers have named Kurt Schottenheimer as their new defensive backs coach, replacing Bob Slowik, who was promoted to defensive coordinator/assistant head coach. Shottenheimer spent the past two seasons as the Detroit Lions defensive coordinator.

Tom Silverstein, of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Kurt Schottenheimer is the leading candidate to fill an opening on Green Bay Packers head coach Mike Sherman's defensive coaching staff, but he is unlikely to be the coordinator. Two NFL sources said Tuesday, Jan. 27, that Sherman had been courting Schottenheimer and was in discussions with the Lions over how to settle the one year left on Schottenheimer's contract. One of the sources said Schottenheimer was being courted as an assistant coach and probably would fill a position created by the promotion of assistant head coach / defensive backs Bob Slowik to defensive coordinator.

Mike O'Hara, of The Detroit News, reports the Detroit Lions hosted recently fired Chicago Bears head coach Dick Jauron with the possible intent of hiring him as their new defensive coordinator. Thursday, Jan. 15, Jauron met with Lions head coach Steve Mariucci at the team's headquarters, but Mariucci declined to comment. Currently, Kurt Schottenheimer is the team's defensive coordinator, but Mariucci has declined to comment about making the change.
