Lions | Lewis Refutes Retirement, Harrington Speculation

Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Sherman Lewis, who will retire at the end of January, refuted a recent story that suggested he was forced out as coordinator; and secondly, that he wrote letters to management expressing his doubts regarding QB Joey Harrington's long-term development, reports Jay Clemons of DetroitLions.com. "The suggestion that I sent letters to Mr. Ford, Bill Ford and [general manager Matt Millen] regarding [QB Joey Harrington] is ludicrous," Lewis said. "I did not send any letters as indicated. To insinuate that my retirement is anything but my desire is equally absurd. No one in the organization knew anything about my retirement until the day after the Tennessee game when I informed [head coach Steve Mariucci] of my intent to retire and spend more time with my family."

Lions | Lewis Set to Retire

SportsTicker.com reports Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Sherman Lewis will retire at the end of January. Lewis, who has been with the Lions since 2002, has been an NFL assistant for 22 seasons. "He's a Detroit Lion forever, and we're going to miss him," said head coach Steve Mariucci, who started coaching with Lewis in Green Bay in 1992. "He's a great man and a heck of a coach."

DetroitLions.com reports Detroit Lions coach Steve Mariucci said we would meet one-on-one with all of the members of the current Lions staff, but has already met with John Marshall and current offensive coordinator Sherman Lewis. "I talked to Sherm Lewis and John Marshall today mainly because I have worked with them before in the NFL," Mariucci said. "I also talked with (Assistant to the head coach) Phil Stearns and just spoke briefly with some of the other assistants and told them I would meet with them tomorrow (Thursday).

The Detroit News reports Detroit Lions special offensive assistant Sherman Lewis, who was hired in 2002 because of his knowledge of the West Coast offense and spent 10 seasons as offensive coordinator in Green Bay and Minnesota, is the top candidate to replace offensive coordinator Maurice Carthon.
