Philadelphia Eagles PK David Akers has established the NFL record of most field goals in a season of 40 yards or longer, according to Bob Kent of PhiladelphiaEagles.com. Akers had 17 field goals of 40 yards or longer during the 2004 season; former Indianapolis Colts PK Cary Blanchard (1996) and Green Bay Packers PK Ryan Longwell (2000) held the previous record of 16 field goals.

The NY Post reports with PK Owen Pochman (knee) still hobbled, the New York Giants worked out PKs Cary Blanchard (Cardinals) and Steve Videtich (Arena League) Tuesday. The Giants did not announce having signed either, yet.

The Arizona Republic reports Arizona Cardinals head coach Dave McGinnis plans to retain all of his coaching staff and noted the No. 1 priority is re-signing some of their free agents. The Cardinals have a large list of unrestricted free agents, including S Kwamie Lassiter, S Pat Tillman, RB Michael Pittman, OT Anthony Clement, CBs Corey Chavous and Tommy Knight, LB Zach Walz, TE Terry Hardy, LS Trey Junkin, QB Dave Brown and PK Cary Blanchard. Blanchard won't be back, but McGinnis would like to have several of the others to return, most notably Lassiter, Tillman, Clement and Pittman.

Darren Urban reports for the East Valley Tribune Arizona Cardinals PK Cary Blanchard, currently on the injured reserve list, will have surgery on his foot Sept. 10 in San Jose, California. He still hopes to be able to return to the field later this season, although because the Cardinals put him on the injured list it would have to be with another team after the Cardinals cut him.

NFL.com reports the Arizona Cardinals have released DE Andy Bowers, OT Michael Cook, S Deke Cooper, WR Bryan Gilmore, TE Tevita Ofahengaue, DE Brad Ottis, WR Nathan Poole, FB Paul Shields, TE Jay Tant, RB Clarence Williams and LB Michael Young. They placed PK Cary Blanchard, OT Norberto Davidds-Garrido and LB James Folston on injured reserve.

The Arizona Republic reports Arizona Cardinals PK Cary Blanchard had an MRI which revealed he has a torn abductor tendon in his right big toe. A decision will be made as to whether the kicker will undergo surgery, which could sideline him at least three months, or whether he'll spend a similar period waiting for the injury to heal. He suffered the injury two weeks ago when he missed a field-goal attempt against Seattle. The Cards could put him on IR or release him with an injury settlement. DT Mao Tosi (stiff neck) missed practice Tuesday morning. WR MarTay Jenkins (bruised quadriceps) and LB Johnny Rutledge (hamstring) missed their second straight practice.

The Arizona Republic reports Arizona Cardinals starting OT L.J. Shelton will miss Saturday's pre-season game due to the lingering effects of a car accident Wednesday. Norberto Davidds-Garrido will start at left tackle, and rookie Jarvis Borum will see increased playing time. TE Elliott Carson, FB Joel Makovicka and PK Cary Blanchard are also still out because of injuries.

The Arizona Republic reports results of an MRI on Arizona Cardinals PK Cary Blanchard's injured right foot have not been released yet. If not for the injury, Blanchard might have been cut this week. Also, LB James Folston has a herniated disc in his back that could require surgery. Folston said doctors want him to rest a week or two to see if the condition improves. LB Rob Fredrickson didn't practice for the second straight day on Tuesday. FB Joel Makovicka (hamstring) didn't practice as well.

The Associated Press reports Arizona Cardinals LB Rob Fredrickson (back spasms) missed practice on Monday. He missed last weekend's pre-season game after experiencing back spasms during pre-game stretching. Coach Dave McGinnis said Fredrickson is "going to be fine, but he was still stiff today and we didn't want to risk playing him." PK Cary Blanchard, apparently trailing rookie PK Bill Gramatica in the race to be the team's place kicker, missed practice with a swollen foot. McGinnis did not know how Blanchard was injured.

The East Valley Tribune reports Arizona Cardinals rookie PK Bill Gramatica all but closed off the kicker competition on Saturday night, hitting three field goals and having good distance on his kickoffs. Veteran Cary Blanchard missed a 27-yard attempt and hurt a toe on his kicking foot.
