xArizona Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said 1B Paul Goldschmidt will continue to see a majority of the playing time at first base even though 1B Lyle Overbay is batting .370 this season. Gibson said he can't see Overbay playing five or six games a week.

Arizona Diamondbacks 1B Paul Goldschmidt took the day off Wednesday, April 18, and he was replaced by 1B Lyle Overbay. Goldschmidt is just 6-for-30 (.200) with two doubles and a home run. Overbay is hitting .286 (4-for-14) with two doubles and a home run.

Arizona Diamondbacks 3B Geoff Blum and 1B Lyle Overbay are on the bubble when it comes to winning a bench spot this spring. INF Willie Bloomquist, SS Stephen Drew (ankle), 1B Paul Goldschmidt, 2B Aaron Hill, INF John McDonald and 3B Ryan Roberts are locks. It all depends on if Drew will be ready for opening day whether another spot will open up.

Updating a previous report, the Arizona Diamondbacks have still not officially re-signed 1B Lyle Overbay, but both sides are expected to come together for a one-year deal worth about $1 million, according to a source.

The Arizona Diamondbacks are nearing a deal to bring back free-agent 1B Lyle Overbay (Diamondbacks) on a one-year contract. "I would say it's progressing well, but it's not done," general manager Kevin Towers said Tuesday, Dec. 6. "Everything looks good, although it's not a done deal. I'm cautiously optimistic."

First base appears to be the only area the Arizona Diamondbacks need to address entering the winter meetings, but the team may address that even before meetings begin next week should the club re-sign 1B Lyle Overbay.

Arizona Diamondbacks 1B Lyle Overbay got the starting nod in manager Kirk Gibson's lineup for Game 1 of the National League Division Series against the Milwaukee Brewers. He was hitless in three at-bats with a strikeout. Overbay was getting the start over rookie 1B Paul Goldschmidt, but both are expected to see starts in the series.
