Miami Marlins C Jeff Mathis (collarbone) was scheduled to catch nine innings with Triple-A New Orleans Sunday, May 12, and Monday, May 13, and he could return from the disabled list as early as Tuesday, May 14.

Fantasy Tip: Miguel Olivo and Rob Brantly have been splitting time behind the dish for the Fish. Mathis will be involved in a time share, at best, when he returns, so restrict him to NL-only leagues and two-catcher formats.

Miami Marlins 1B Casey Kotchman (hamstring) will be put on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring Friday, April 5. A corresponding roster move will be made then. Kotchman said he heard a pop while running out a double-play ground ball. 3B Greg Dobbs was playing first base Thursday, April 4, but OFs Austin Kearns and Chris Valaika and C Miguel Olivo are possibilities to take over at first.

Fantasy Tip: None of the options to replace Kotchman at first base are worth looks except in cavernous NL-only leagues as corner infield depth.

Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco will make the roster after the team offered C Miguel Olivo a $100,000 retention bonus to accept an assignment to Triple-A Louisville. It's unknown if Olivo will accept the deal.

Fantasy Tip: Mesoraco is still developing as a young catcher and will play second fiddle to Ryan Hanigan. The power is intriguing, but he's nothing more than a weak No. 2 catcher until he earns more playing time.

Cincinnati Reds C Ryan Hanigan (oblique) is out at least a week and as a result, Cs Devin Mesoraco and Miguel Olivo will receive more repetitions. "Mesoraco is getting better - receiving, throwing, hitting. There is a lot that a catcher has to think about," said manager Dusty Baker. "We'd like some more offensive output from our catchers, which we were accustomed to with Ramon Hernandez and Hanigan."

The Cincinnati Reds signed free-agent C Miguel Olivo (Mariners) to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training Friday, Feb. 1. The Reds already have Cs Ryan Hanigan and Devin Mesoraco on the roster. The Philadelphia Phillies, Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers also showed interest in Olivo.

The New York Mets are reportedly interested in free-agent C Miguel Olivo (Mariners). The team had previously expressed interest in acquiring him midway through the 2012 season.
