Green Bay Packers head coach Mike Sherman said the team is currently confident in their backup running backs at this time. He noted that FB Tony Carter has also worked in practice as a tailback, which gives the team a little extra depth at the position. At this time, he does not anticipate the team adding another back to the roster.

Updating an earlier story, the Journal Sentinel reports Green Bay Packers FB William Henderson (sprained knee) will likely not play this Sunday. FB Tony Carter will start in his place. "He wants to go and there's an outside shot, but I doubt it," coach Mike Sherman said. "I feel comfortable at fullback. Tony Carter has actually done an exceptional job in practice."

According to the Journal Sentinel, the Green Bay Packers worked out free agent FB Tony Carter on Tuesday. The Packers could sign Carter Wednesday, if the condition of FB William Henderson's sprained knee leaves him unavailable for an extended period. "I think it's worse than they thought it was," Vern Sharbaugh, the agent for Carter, said about Henderson's condition.

The Rocky Mountain News reports sources said the Denver Broncos are close to giving up on their attempt to sign free agent FB Sam Gash (Ravens). He has refused one- and three-year offers from the Broncos. The team may look for a fullback in the NFL Draft, stick with Tony Carter or possibly look to re-sign Detron Smith (who was previously released).

Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan said DL Trevor Pryce (nerve) underwent an MRI on Monday and is okay, as the results were negative. FB Tony Carter (nerve) also underwent an MRI and should be okay. OL Matt Lepsis (knee) played through his ailing knee and the team is hopeful of no setbacks. He was sore on Monday, as was OL Dan Neil (ankle), who re-injured his ankle. S Kenoy Kennedy (back) was in pretty good shape on Monday and was able to play through a back injury on Sunday. DT Chester McGlockton (bruised shoulder/calf irritation) should be all right as well. DE Bertland Berry (shoulder) suffered a 2nd or 3rd degree shoulder injury and is doubtful to questionable right now.

S Kenoy Kennedy (back) was quite sore on Monday but should be available to play this weekend. FB Tony Carter (sprained knee), DT Chester McGlockton (ankle), OG Dan Neil (ankle) and DE Kavika Pittman (bruised shoulder) should be okay. The team will evaluate WR/ST Kevin Kasper (ankle) on Wednesday; he was feeling better on Monday.

The Associated Press reports Denver Broncos FB Tony Carter took over as the team's starting fullback last Monday night. The move allowed Patrick Hape to return to his natural position of TE. "It was an uphill battle," Carter said. "It took a long time. I just feel like I'm healed up now, and I'm looking forward to some good things." "Tony has been playing well," coach Mike Shanahan said Friday. Shanahan said Hape now will play at both positions.

The Associated Press reports Denver Broncos FBs Detron Smith (ankle) and Tony Carter (shoulder), RB Terrell Davis, CB Willie Middlebrooks (knee), DT Montae Reagor (knee) and wide WR Keith Poole (hamstring) are among the players that will not travel to Dallas for the team's pre-season game this weekend. Backup QB Steve Beuerlein will make the trip, but not dress.

The Gazette reports Denver Broncos FB Tony Carter returned to practice on Thursday for the first time since Saturday. He's been out with a sore shoulder, and he continued to favor his right shoulder on Thursday. Returning starter Howard Griffith remained out with his neck problem, and spent Thursday in Denver seeing a specialist, for a second opinion after an MRI came back negative. Coach Mike Shanahan has also been impressed with RB Olandis Gary during the limited action he has seen at fullback.

The Rocky Mountain News reports three of the Denver Broncos fullbacks missed practice time on Tuesday. Howard Griffith (neck), Tony Carter (shoulder) and Detron Smith (ankle) all sat out. An MRI of Griffith's injury revealed a pinched nerve and he is expected back on Wednesday. FB Mike Stack took most of the action at fullback, although Olandis Gary took a few snaps there to help out.

The Daily Camera reports Denver Broncos rookie CB Willie Middlebrooks was held out of afternoon practice Saturday due to a twisted knee. He is expected back soon. FB Tony Carter left practice due to dehydration. As an update to an earlier story, backup C K.C. Jones will inded miss the entire season after being placed on the reserve non-football injury list. His injuries are so serious coach Mike Shanahan said he didn't expect Jones to re-join the team until the 2002-03 season.

The Denver Post reports Denver Broncos RB Terrell Davis, suffering through a stress fracture in his leg, will sit out of this weekend's mini-camp. The Broncos will work RBs Olandis Gary and Mike Anderson in at the tailback position. With the Broncos adding another fullback (Tony Carter), it's now unlikely that the team would try to convert Gary or Anderson into a fullback.

According to the Denver Post, the Denver Broncos have agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent FB Tony Carter (Patriots) on a one-year, $477,000 deal. Carter won't land a signing bonus in the contract, but could earn another $400,000 in incentives.

The Denver Post reports with many team apparently interested in his services, Denver Broncos free agent FB Howard Griffith made his first official free agent visit this week - he met with Broncos coach Mike Shanahan. At the end of the meeting, Griffith felt better about remaining a Bronco. "I feel positive about coming back to Denver," Griffith said Thursday. As previously reported, the Broncos have shown some interest in free agent FB Tony Carter (Patriots) and the Raiders have held preliminary talks with Griffith. Griffith said he told the Broncos that with whatever offer he receives, he will notify them to see if they are interested in matching.

The Boston Globe reports the New England Patriots would like to re-sign DT Henry Thomas, at a cheaper rate. Thomas reportedly has received calls from St. Louis, Tennessee, Minnesota, and Indianapolis, but there have been no offers. Ex-Patriots FB Tony Carter is reportedly drawing interest from the Denver Broncos, according to his agent Vern Sharbaugh. Another Sharbaugh client, Lions free agent C/G Mike Compton has visited with the Patriots.

The Boston Herald, as an update to previous stories, reports New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick confirmed that the team won't re-sign DT Chad Eaton before free agency begins. He'll join OL Bruce Armstrong, FB Tony Carter and LB Brandon Mitchell as unrestricted free agents. In other news, DT Henry Thomas' agent, Jeff Durand, believes Thomas won't be cut and stated the team hasn't approached him about being released or asking him to take a pay cut.

The Boston Herald reports there have been no talks between the New England Patriots and free agent to be FB Tony Carter. Chances are Carter may only return if he accepts a minimum offer. Due to the later free agent period, the payment dates for NFL roster bonuses due in February and March have been pushed back 14 days. This will affect players due roster bonuses that are in danger of being cut. One example - QB John Friesz was due a $500,000 bonus on March 1 and that date is now March 15.

Patriots | Problems Continue at Running Back

The Boston Herald reports New England Patriots RB J.R. Redmond (ankle) once again showed doesn't have the word durable in his list of qualities. Redmond looked good early yesterday, rushing for 66 yards on 20 carries but then injured his right ankle and wasn't able to return. X-rays were negative, but Redmond isn't likely to play next week. RB Kevin Faulk replaced him, but quickly fumbled and was replaced by FB Tony Carter. Faulk was later allowed to return to the field. RB Raymont Harris was declared inactive before the game began.
