Arizona Diamondbacks C Rod Barajas' minor league deal will be worth $800,000 if he makes the major league roster. C Wil Nieves will also make $800,000 if he makes the team, but it's not fully guaranteed. If the team cuts ties with Nieves before opening day, they'll owe him $200,000.

The Arizona Diamondbacks signed free-agent C Rod Barajas (Pirates) to a minor league deal Friday, Feb. 8. He'll likely compete with C Wil Nieves for the backup job.

Updating a previous report, the Arizona Diamondbacks have claimed C Wil Nieves off waivers from the Colorado Rockies. In a corresponding move, the team placed C Henry Blanco (hand) on the 15-day disabled list with a hand injury.

The Colorado Rockies are expected to designate C Wil Nieves for assignment after they didn't trade C Ramon Hernandez by the trade deadline. The Washington Nationals and Tampa Bay Rays could be interested in trading for Nieves if he clears waivers.

Colorado Rockies C Wil Nieves (toe) started a rehab assignment with Triple-A Colorado Springs with an expiration date of Tuesday, July 31. Nieves doesn't have any minor league options remaining.
