The Pittsburgh Pirates opted not to renew Double-A Altoona manager Matt Walbeck's contract for 2011, FOXSports.com's Jon Paul Morosi reports. Walbeck, viewed by some in the industry as a future major-league manager, led the Altoona Curve to the Eastern League title and was named Eastern League Manager of the Year.

Jason Beck, of Detroit.Tigers.MLB.com, reports the Detroit Tigers have announced their Double-A Erie coaching staff for the 2007 season. Matt Walbeck will manage the club, while A.J. Sager will be the pitching coach, Glenn Adams the hitting coach and Chris McDonald the trainer.

The Detroit Free Press' Jon Paul Morosi reports a pair of minor-league coaches in the Detroit Tigers organization earned promotions on Nov. 6. Matt Walbeck will manage Double-A Erie after winning two Midwest League titles in three seasons at Class-A West Michigan. Tom Brookens, a Tiger for 10 seasons, will replace Walbeck at West Michigan, following two years at Oneonta of the short-season Class A New York-Penn League.

Jason Beck, of Detroit.Tigers.MLB.com, reports the Detroit Tigers are expected to look within their minor league system for a new manager for their Double-A Erie affiliate. Class A West Michigan manager Matt Walbeck is one of the candidates for the job, especially as he has said he will not be returning to West Michigan next season.

John Lowe and Gene Guidi of The Detroit Free Press report Detroit Tigers C Matt Walbeck has given up playing to become manager of the West Michigan Whitecaps, the Tigers' Class A club in the Midwest League. "I'm very excited," Walbeck said. "It's a great opportunity for me. I've felt led in the direction of managing and coaching since I first entered pro ball."
