Royals | Jarrod Dyson to DL

Fri, 17 May 2013 10:27:41 -0700

Kansas City Royals OF Jarrod Dyson (ankle) has been placed on the 15-day disabled list. The team has recalled OF David Lough from Triple-A Omaha.

Fantasy Tip: Dyson's recent increase in playing time comes to a temp end. Jeff Francoeur will probably get his PT back but is at best a 15-team mixed league reserve unless he gets hot. If Lough gets a few ABs, he may be useful in deep AL-only leagues.

Royals | No platoon at 2B or in OF

Thu, 16 May 2013 14:24:08 -0700

Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost is riding hot streaks from OF Jarrod Dyson (ankle) and 2B Elliot Johnson right now, and he indicated that he doesn't mean he's going with platoon setups at those positions. "I could play (Jeff) Francoeur (on Friday) against a right-hander," Yost said. "Then it's not a platoon. I'm going day-to-day right now. Dyson is swinging the bat well, so he's playing more." Dyson's availability is in question for this weekend, though, after he sprained his right ankle Wednesday, May 15. Dyson has started five of the team's last eight games and brings speed to their lineup. Johnson is the team's primary utility player in the infield, but he's started eight of the last 14 games with 2B Chris Getz hitting in a 4-for-47 (.193) slump.

Fantasy Tip: Dyson's playing time streak could run out due to his injury, depending on the severity, but he's worth owning while he's playing for his speed skills in deep leagues. Johnson is worth a pick-up in AL-only leagues while he's swinging a hot bat, too.

Royals | Lineup changes take effect

Thu, 09 May 2013 16:29:17 -0700

Kansas City Royals OF Alex Gordon has moved from the leadoff spot to third Thursday, May 9, with 1B Billy Butler hitting cleanup. "The most important two spots we have in the lineup right now should be manned by Gordy and Billy," manager Ned Yost said. "That's three and four. Everything else is interchangeable depending on who's hot and the matchups." The team's No. 4 hitter has ranked last in RBIs (seven), extra-base hits (six) and slugging percentage (.277), and they are ranked 29th among 30 teams with a .271 on-base percentage. SS Alcides Escobar is batting leadoff with OF Lorenzo Cain following him. Escobar prefers to hit second and has much more experience in that slot, but he doesn't have a problem hitting atop the order. 2B Chris Getz and OF Jeff Francoeur returned to the lineup Thursday, but they'll need to show production soon if they want to keep everyday jobs. Yost plans on using this new-look lineup for an extended period of time.

Fantasy Tip: Right now, Gordon and Butler are the team's best hitters, so it makes sense to put them in the biggest run-producing spots in the lineup. Yost also cited that it splits up his left- and right-handed bats in Gordon and Eric Hosmer and Butler and Mike Moustakas.

Royals | Lineup changes looming?

Wed, 08 May 2013 15:07:52 -0700

Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost is considering changing up his lineup in the near future that would possibly include moving OF Alex Gordon from leadoff to third in the lineup and increased playing time for OF Jarrod Dyson and 2B Elliot Johnson. Dyson started in center field Wednesday, May 8, and OF Lorenzo Cain shifted to right in place of struggling OF Jeff Francoeur. Johnson started for the second day over 2B Chris Getz. Gordon is hitting only .180 (9-for-50) when leading off an inning compared to .490 (24-for-49) with runners on base. Yost is considering Dyson, Cain or SS Alcides Escobar for options at leadoff. Moving Gordon to third in the lineup would allow 1B Billy Butler to return to the cleanup spot.

Fantasy Tip: This could have varying degrees of fantasy implications. For one, this will give Gordon more opportunities for RBIs, and it also should put Dyson on the radar of deep mixed gamers if Francoeur continues to lose out. Yost believes Eric Hosmer eventually deserves to be the three hitter, but he's holding off until he picks it up at the plate.

Royals | Jeff Francoeur sinks old team

Wed, 17 Apr 2013 20:37:41 -0700

Kansas City Royals OF Jeff Francoeur delivered an RBI single in the top of the fourth inning Wednesday, April 17, in a 1-0 win against the Atlanta Braves, his former team. He was born and raised in Atlanta, and started his career with his hometown team before being traded in 2009. "It means a little bit more personally," Francoeur said. "You want to say you're focused all the time but there's definitely some extra motivation coming home here for me."

Royals | More on Billy Butler decision

Fri, 05 Apr 2013 12:50:40 -0700

Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost chose to sit 1B Billy Butler in favor of 1B Eric Hosmer Friday, April 5, mostly because the team will face left-handed pitchers for the rest of the weekend. "If I sit Hos today," Yost said, "he doesn't (start) for three days. If a pitcher has never faced a hitter, the advantage kind of goes to the pitcher. Kendrick has never faced Billy or Hos." OF Jeff Francoeur is also 9-for-22 in his career against Philadelphia Phillies SP Kyle Kendrick. Yost is reluctant to put Hosmer in the outfield, so Francoeur will likely start all three games against the Phils. INFs Miguel Tejada and Elliot Johnson might also see playing time this weekend.

Fantasy Tip: You'll want to get Butler back in your lineups this weekend in daily leagues. The opposite goes for Hosmer if you can swap guys in and out on a daily basis.

Royals | Eric Hosmer to see time in RF

Wed, 27 Mar 2013 20:59:21 -0700

Kansas City Royals 1B Eric Hosmer is scheduled to see time in right field during the Cactus League spring game Thursday, March 28. It could be a preview for next weekend during interleague play against the Philadelphia Phillies, in a National League park when the designated hitter is not used. "We'll see," manager Ned Yost said Wednesday, March 27. "Frenchy (OF Jeff Francoeur) could start the year as our hottest player, and I wouldn't be taking him out."

Royals | Jeff Francoeur not caught up in spring results

Wed, 20 Mar 2013 17:45:56 -0700

Kansas City Royals OF Jeff Francoeur, who is hitting .232 with a .271 on-base percentage this spring, said he doesn't pay too much attention to his spring results because he's still ironing out the kinks in his swing. "Some guys can be ready with 35 or 40 at-bats," he said. "Billy (Butler) is one of those guys. But I can't. I need to see pitches - and more late in camp. Then you face people that you know. That's key." The team is slightly concerned with Francoeur's results, though, and they may consider using OF David Lough to spell Francoeur against tough right-handed pitchers this year.

Fantasy Tip: Francoeur will be hard pressed to surpass 500 at-bats in a full season again, especially if he continues to struggle against southpaws. This makes him pretty unattractive in mixed leagues.
