The New York Mets signed free-agent C Raul Chavez (Blue Jays) to a minor league contract that includes a spring training invitation Friday, Jan. 14. No financial terms were announced, according to MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger.

Jordan Bastian, of MLB.com, reports Toronto Blue Jays C Raul Chavez will serve as the backup to C J.P. Arencibia at Triple-A Las Vegas this year. Arencibia projects to be the team's starting catcher in 2011.

Jordan Bastian, of MLB.com, reports Toronto Blue Jays C Rod Barajas (hamstring) is not in the lineup Tuesday, June 30, while dealing with a sore right hamstring. Manager Cito Gaston said Barajas and C Raul Chavez will alternate starts for the time being.

Updating previous reports, Toronto Blue Jays C Kyle Phillips is expected to join the team in case C Rod Barajas (hamstring) is placed on the disabled list, according to The Associated Press. Phillips had been playing for Triple-A Las Vegas. C Raul Chavez started Saturday, June 27, against the Philadelphia Phillies.
