Reds | Billy Hamilton can help at shortstop

The Cincinnati Reds could break camp without a shortstop to back up SS Zack Cozart. INF Ramon Santiago is a candidate as a backup shortstop, but he is no lock to make the team, nor is INF Chris Nelson. 3B Todd Frazier was drafted as a shortstop, and he could be used to fill in. OF Billy Hamilton has also played 312 minor league games at shortstop, and manager Bryan Price acknowledged Hamilton could see time there if needed.

Reds | Ramon Santiago agrees

The Cincinnati Reds agreed to terms with free-agent INF Ramon Santiago (Tigers) Wednesday, Jan. 29, on a minor league deal with an invite to spring training. He'll make $1.1 million.

Tigers | Jose Iglesias out with elbow injury

Detroit Tigers SS Jose Iglesias (elbow) will be unavailable against the New York Mets Saturday, Aug. 24, because of a sore left elbow. Iglesias was hit by a pitch from RP David Aardsma Friday, Aug. 23, in the ninth inning. He remained in the game but his elbow eventually swelled up to the point where he couldn't bend his arm. X-rays were negative and manager Jim Leyland hopes he can return to action Sunday, Aug. 25. INF Ramon Santiago will get the start at shortstop Saturday.

The Detroit Tigers placed 2B Omar Infante (shin, ankle) on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, July 9. The move is retroactive to July 4, and he can return after the All-Star break.

Fantasy Tip: Looking at the bright side, Infante will only miss games through this weekend and can return next Friday, July 19. Ramon Santiago will have very short-term value in AL leagues until then.

Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland had planned to start INF Ramon Santiago (dehydration) at shortstop against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Sunday, April 21, but is holding him out after he became dehydrated Saturday, April 20. SS Jhonny Peralta will start at shortstop Sunday.

Detroit Tigers OF Brennan Boesch (oblique) took batting practice Tuesday, Feb. 26, and SS Ramon Santiago (calf) is feeling much improved from his strained right calf. Boesch hopes to be ready for live batting practice mid-week, and he could play in games by the end of the week. Santiago remains out indefinitely.
