Tigers | No pain for Miguel Cabrera

Mon, 23 Feb 2015 14:06:30 -0800

Detroit Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera (ankle, foot) arrived at training camp Monday, Feb. 23, and said he felt no pain and there were no issues with his right foot. He will begin running on an AlterG anti-gravity treadmill sometime this week, and he wants to be ready for opening day.

Fantasy Tip: It is unlikely Cabrera misses enough time to significantly hinder his year-end numbers, and he might not miss time at all. He is still an elite hitter, and he should be considered a first-round pick in fantasy drafts. Keep checking back for updates on his progress leading into the season, but it currently appears he'll miss minimal time, if any.

Tigers | Miguel Cabrera unsure of availability

Mon, 23 Feb 2015 10:52:13 -0800

Detroit Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera (ankle, foot) is unsure if he'll be ready for opening day. "I think it's too early to say that so we'll see what happens," Cabrera said.

Fantasy Tip: With uncertainty surrounding Cabrera, he has fallen to the end of the first round in fantasy baseball drafts. If he doesn't have any setbacks for the rest of spring, there's a great chance that he'll be ready sometime in April, though. However, Cabrera's injuries leave many wondering if his decline is coming.

Detroit Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera (ankle, foot) has been hitting and is not dealing with any pain, according to manager Brad Ausmus.

Fantasy Tip: It appears Cabrera is making progress, but it is still not known if he will be ready for the start of the regular season. Cabrera should still be selected at some point in the first round of most drafts even though he could miss time early.

Tigers | Miguel Cabrera cleared to hit, throw

Wed, 18 Feb 2015 13:16:22 -0800

Detroit Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera (ankle, foot) is expected to be ready for opening day after he was cleared for "non-impact exercises." He can now begin hitting, throwing and running after being examined by foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson, who performed foot and ankle surgery on Cabrera this offseason. Anderson's evaluation showed "a good progression of healing."

Fantasy Tip: Cabrera is no longer a surefire overall No. 1 fantasy baseball pick. That designation now belongs to Mike Trout. However, Cabrera is still going in the latter part of the first round. The news on his injuries is great, but we still need to see how he performs this spring. If a setback occurs, you can be sure that he'll fall completely out of the first round in 12-team setups.

Tigers | Miguel Cabrera's foot the issue

Mon, 16 Feb 2015 10:51:11 -0800

Updating a previous report, Detroit Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera (ankle, foot) will have a follow-up exam that is expected to include a CT scan on his foot to check on its healing. His foot is the main concern, since it was the more serious surgery. Cabrera should be cleared for baseball activities if his foot is healed, but he might not be at the same level of activity as the rest of the players during spring training, as he'll have to catch up from a conditioning standpoint. He has been limited in weight-bearing exercises to let his foot heal. Cabrera's status for opening day may be in question if he needs more time to heal, but the team currently expects him to be ready for the April 6 opener or shortly thereafter.

Fantasy Tip: Because of his injuries, Cabrera is falling to the late first round in fantasy baseball drafts. Depending on his checkup tomorrow, though, he could be justified as a strong pick in the middle of the first round, or he'll fall even further, possibly into the early second round of 12-team leagues.

Tigers | Victor Martinez could catch some

Sat, 31 Jan 2015 14:19:58 -0800

Detroit Tigers DH/1B Victor Martinez could be used at catcher early in the 2015 season. If 1B Miguel Cabrera (ankle) is ready for the beginning of the season, Martinez will be used at catcher during the road series against the Pittsburgh Pirates April 13-15. If Cabrera is out, V-Mart will be at first base. The Tigers play seven more games in National League parks without the designated hitter in 2015. Martinez could catch in a couple of those to keep his bat in the lineup.
