Mike O'Hara reports for the Detroit News the Detroit Lions are preparing to release WR Germane Crowell. As previously noted, has a $2 million payment due by March 2 for the team to pick up the last two years of a three-year contract. Coach Steve Mariucci was diplomatic in talking about Crowell's future. "We're still in discussions," Mariucci said Thursday at the NFL's annual combine. "Players like that deserve to have as much discussion as possible." The team could look to re-sign Crowell at a later time.

"That is a probability unless something crazy happens," Mornhinweg said. "He and I have discussed these issues. He had that one big year in his second year. He has been hurt for two consecutive years. The key for him is getting both of those knees healthy and that will allow him to have the opportunity to get back and play at that high level."

For the first time this year, including training camp, the Lions had WRs Az-Zahir Hakim, Bill Schroeder and Germane Crowell and TE Mikhael Ricks together on the practice field this week. Updating previous reports, DetroitLions.com reports the Detroit Lions may have WR Germane Crowell (knees) on their PUP list at the start of training camp. If a player starts training camp on the PUP list, they can be moved to the active roster at any time. As of the last update, Crowell was running vertically on his repaired knees but the team wants to ease his way back onto the field. The team wants to make sure Crowell is ready to start the season.

After not being able to throw deep too often last season, Mornhinweg believes the Lions now possess the speed to create some anxiety for the defense. The team's West Coast offense is known for its short passing attack, but it's designed for the ball to come out quickly and hit an open receiver in stride, leading to big yardage. Mornhinweg would like to start WRs Bill Schroeder and Germane Crowell on the outside and put WR Az-Zahir Hakim in the slot, where he would put the most stress on the defense.

Head coach Marty Mornhinweg indicated that Crowellís workout regimen might increase soon. He added the team will use caution with him because heís still in the rehabilitation process. He's charging that he's owed a total of $220,000 in commissions.

Updating previous reports, ESPN's John Clayton reports the deal agreed upon in principle between the Detroit Lions and free agent WR Germane Crowell is a three-year, $7.5 million deal that includes a $1 million signing bonus. The deal is set up to reward Crowell in 2003 by giving him the opportunity to be paid $3 million through an option bonus and base salary if he returns well from his torn patellar tendon.

Bates and Driver are restricted free agents. Bates carries no compensation, due to a Bears clerical error and Driver's compensation is a seventh-round draft pick. WR Jerome Pathon (Colts) is expected to visit next week, while the team is trying to determine whether WR Germane Crowell (Lions) is healthy enough to work out before bringing him in.
