Rick Dean reports for the Capital Journal the Kansas City Chiefs continue to look for ways to reduce their salary cap overrun. Reportedly WR Derrick Alexander has restructured the final two years of his contract, saving the Chiefs some $2 million against the cap. He accepted a large amount of upfront money to sign a new deal that probably will reduce his base salary to the NFL veteran's minimum of $484,000. The Chiefs will either release or restructure RB Donnell Bennett, DB Carlton Gray and RB Kimble Anders. Decisions on CB James Hasty ($6.6 million) and DL Chester McGlockton ($8 million) and Dan Williams are tougher because of signing bonus issues. The also need to decide whether to chase a free agent RB like Charlie Garner or to try and trade for Ricky Watters.

The Kansas City Star reports Kansas City Chiefs RB/FB Tony Richardson will see plenty of action this weekend. Richardson will play both fullback and tailback during the game. During single back sets, Richardson will get the nod. In two back sets, Richardson will play fullback while rookie Frank Moreau will play tailback. RB Kimble Anders will backup both positions.

The Kansas City Star reports Kansas City Chiefs FB Donnell Bennett (knee) underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on Wednesday and is done for the year. The team worked Kimble Anders and Tony Richardson at fullback during Wednesday's practice. Richardson's natural position is fullback, but the team wants him to remain at tailback so they're still figuring out what direction they want to go this weekend. RBs Mike Cloud and Frank Moreau saw some work at halfback during practice.

The Kansas City Star reports the Kansas City Chiefs plan to continue using Tony Richardson at tailback this weekend and if FB Donnell Bennett (foot) is not able to play, the team may replace him with either Kimble Anders or Frank Moreau as they do not want to have to use Richardson at the position. Should Richardson impress again in the team's final two games, it may sway their opinions against looking for another feature back during the off-season. RB Mike Cloud appears out of the picture in Kansas City as the team hasn't used him in almost two months.

The Kansas City Star reports the Chiefs will not go with a youth movement yet and try to begin analyzing players for the 2001 season. How did the Chiefs depth chart shape up at minicamp? On offense, the line was from left to right, Glenn Parker, Dave Szott, Tim Grunhard, Will Shields, Victor Riley and Tony Gonzalez at tight end. WRs Kevin Lockett and Joe Horn split time playing for the injured Derrick Alexander across from Andre Rison. The RB was Bam Morris while Kimble Anders played fullback, with Elvis Grbac at QB. On defense, Ty Parten played left defensive end for John Browning, who as reported earlier, was sitting out with a knee injury. Chester McGlockton and Dan Williams played DT with Leslie O'Neal at right end. The LBs were Derrick Thomas over the tight end, Marvcus Patton in the middle and Donnie Edwards on the weak side. Cris Dishman and James Hasty played CB with Reggie Tongue and Jerome Woods at safety.

By bringing in FB Ron Janes, the Chiefs backfield is stocked with Bam Morris, rookies Mike Cloud and Brian Shay, Donnell Bennett, Kimble Anders, Tony Richardson and Danes. Anders might be the odd man out this season as KC looks to get under the cap. Cunningham is hot to trot over Richardson who has excellent speed and power. Richardson's 40-time is in the neighborhood of 4.3-4.4 If Anders was to have been traded, it would more than likely have happened on draft day. In fact, KC did recieve an offer for Kimble from the Carolina Panthers, but unfortunately, Carolina did not have enough picks to satisfy Chiefs VP/GM Carl Peterson.
