Mon, 16 Apr 2001 00:10:01 -0700 The Boston Herald reports although the New England Patriots are in need of a tight end, chances are the NFL Draft will not be the place they find their answer. It's been 10 years since the Patriots took their last TE that had any impact, a guy named Ben Coates. The Patriots have pursued several veteran free agents this off-season, including Byron Chamberlain, O.J. Santiago, Luther Broughton, Johnny McWilliams and Pete Mitchell. The last three remain free agents and several vets could join them in the free agent pool after June 1. The team would like to add a veteran to team with TE Jermaine Wiggins. The team would like TE Rod Rutledge to step up, but with a $586,000 cap figure there are no guarantees he'll make it through training camp. The Patriots may look for a TE in the later rounds of the draft.
