SF49ers.com reports San Francisco 49ers S Ronnie Heard is ready to take over the starting free safety position after the team released veteran S Zack Bronson earlier this year. "I'm my own guy. I want to start my own thing here," Heard said. "I'm not trying to be Zack Bronson or Merton Hanks or anyone else. Obviously I learned a lot from Zack and I have great respect for him because he taught me about the NFL. But I want to start my own legacy."

The San Jose Mercury News reports the San Francisco 49ers are close to agreeing to a restructured contract with S Merton Hanks. The deal would run through the 2002 season. "It's a happy ending," agent Leigh Steinberg said. "We could complete everything by this week." Under his present contract, which also runs through 2002, Hanks is scheduled to earn $2.35 million in base pay. Steinberg said the alterations to the contract will be reduced to $500,000, with a $1 million signing bonus and incentives that will make it more than $2.35 million if he returns to the Pro Bowl. The 49ers will now be able to pursue franchise player WR Terrell Owens as well as other Free Agents they have been eyeing.

The San Jose Mercury News reports the 49ers are hoping to hold on to S Merton Hanks, but it will only happen if he restructures his contract. The team is hoping he'll lessen his basic salary number but they will then make it up with "makeable incentives." 49ers GM Bill Walsh said he did not ask Hanks to take a pay cut. He also said he feels chances are good that Hanks could remain a 49er.
