Dolphins | No Shepherd

Tue, 07 Aug 2001 07:29:34 -0700

The Sun-Sentinel reports the Miami Dolphins are in the market for a WR and VP of player personnel Rick Spielman acknowledged Monday the team has talked to the agent for free agent WR Leslie Shepherd - but he won't be re-signed. The Dolphins have decided to sign a younger receiver to provide training camp depth after injuries to some of their other WRs. The team is expected to announce the signing of a receiver by Wednesday’s practice session.

Wed, 18 Apr 2001 22:15:48 -0700

The Sun-Sentinel's Chris Perkins reports the signing of WR Dedric Ward is expected to have an effect on WRs Leslie Shepherd, Tony Martin and Lamar Thomas, OT Richmond Webb and S Brock Marion. VP of player personnel, Rick Spielman, indicated Wednesday the team doesn’t have much money remaining under this year’s $67.4 million salary cap. Spielman said they had enough left to sign their draft picks. The team could restructure some other contracts to free up some cap space. When addressing the draft, Spielman said teams have called the Dolphins about their 26th pick. Spielman said the Dolphins will listen to offers. He said they could attempt to move up, or down in the draft.

Dolphins | Team Notes

Tue, 27 Mar 2001 23:44:08 -0800

Alex Marvez reports for the Sun-Sentinel Miami Dolphins DE Kenny Mixon has lost 15 pounds as he hopes to show the team he can play in its nickel and dime packages in addition to other downs. Mixon and Lorenzo Bromell will compete to replace Trace Armstrong, the pass-rush specialist who signed with Oakland. If the team adds another RB, it may be to challenge J.J. Johnson and Autry Denson as third down back as opposed to competition for starting RB Lamar Smith. As of now, it seems unlikely that WR Tony Martin will be re-signed, which means the team will be looking for another veteran WR with Leslie Shepherd a leading candidate.

Dolphins | Looking At WRs

Wed, 17 Jan 2001 01:07:31 -0800

The Sun-Sentinel reports the Miami Dolphins staff is spending a good deal of time at the Senior Bowl looking at WRs. "Everybody knows we're going to be looking at receivers," said Rick Spielman, the director of player personnel. "There's some good receivers down here." Smaller WRs such as Santana Moss and Snoop Minnis are probably not on the team's list. Of the Dolphins top four receivers, only Oronde Gadsden is a lock to return. Tony Martin and O.J. McDuffie may be released for salary cap reasons, and Leslie Shepherd is set to become an unrestricted free agent when the NFL's signing period begins March 2. Other areas of need for the team are OL, LB and QB.

Tue, 26 Dec 2000 13:28:59 -0800

The Miami Herald reports Miami Dolphins WR O.J. McDuffie (toe) stated he doesn't think he'll be with the team in 2001. He was finally part of the offense on Sunday while catching 5 passes and head coach Dave Wannstedt was surprised by McDuffie's comments. McDuffie also pointed out he had 90 receptions for the team two years ago during his statements. With WR Leslie Shepherd (knee) coming back to practice this week, McDuffie's action is expected to lessen again. QB Jay Fiedler also finally found his tight ends last weekend, hitting Jed Weaver with 5 passes and Hunter Goodwin with two. The two combined for 9 receptions on the year entering the game.

Dolphins | Getting Close

Thu, 18 Feb 1999 23:10:00 -0800

The Miami Herald reports the Dolphins are on the verge of signing Free Agent WR Willie Green. The deal is expected to be a fairly small contract money wise and it's not known how his signing will affect the Dolphins plans towards signing either Sean Dawkins or Leslie Shepherd. One factor weighing heavily on any Dolphins signing of a WR is the relatively cheap contract of their No. 1 WR O.J. McDuffie ($1.3 million per year). The team does not want to upset McDuffie.

Dolphins | WRs Visit

Thu, 18 Feb 1999 00:15:00 -0800

The Miami Herald reports the Dolphins visits with WRs Leslie Shepherd and Sean Dawkins on Wednesday went in opposite directions. Dawkins was disappointed with his visit but Shepherd was impressed. Neither player has been offered a contract yet. Dawkins agent indicated he thought his client would be a Ram but he's not sure now as the Rams have been spending big money in the market and may not have enough left to sign Dawkins. Two other Free Agents visited Dolphins camp on Wednesday. They were S Greg Jeffries (DET) and FB Roosevelt Potts (BAL). Reportedly, neither was offered a contract.

Saints | After Holmes?

Tue, 16 Feb 1999 12:35:00 -0800

Michael, our New Orleans correspondent, reports The Biloxi Sun-Herald reported today the team has been in contact with agents for WRs Charles Johnson (just signed with Philadelphia), Leslie Shepherd and Jeff Graham, as well as RB Darick Holmes of Green Bay. The paper quoted a report by New Orleans' WVUE-TV that stated Holmes would visit the team over the next two days. Mark the Saints' interest in Holmes as strong. Saints' capologist Terry O'Neil told WWL Radio yesterday that he expected the Saints to announce another FA signing tomorrow and Holmes is expected to be the only visitor to the Saints between now and then. Speculation also indicates the Saints may have already begun work on a contract with Holmes.

Eagles | Visit Updates

Sat, 13 Feb 1999 18:40:00 -0800

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Free Agents OL Adam Timmerman of the Packers and WR Leslie Shepherd of the Redskins both had good visits with the Eagles on Saturday. As for Timmerman, who also visited with the Rams, he said his next move is to talk with the Packers and then he'll decide his future which may or may not include a visit with former coach Mike Holmgren and the Seahawks. On new Eagles coch Andy Reid Timmerman said, "I love Andy, we had a lot of great years together. We went to two Super Bowls, the playoffs. I think that's something I can bring here, the experience of playing in big games. It's funny. My wife and I were talking about this. With all the changes, we know more people with the Eagles than with the Packers." Sounds like both guys like the situation in Philadelphia.

Dolphins | Thomas Update II

Thu, 11 Feb 1999 22:45:00 -0800

Armando Salguero reports in the Miami Herald the contract signed by LB Zach Thomas is expected to be for five-years for $22.5 million. The deal included a $4.5 million signing bonus. In other team news, coach Jimmy Johnson is disappointed that all the big name WR Free Agents have been franchised and he may have to turn his attention elsewhere. "That was discussed in a staff meeting this morning," Johnson said. "I think there are times you might do that. So I don't totally rule it out. But it was unanimous; no one wanted to do that -- give up a pick and sign a [player to a] big contract. We all know the names; we all know who they are." Look for the team to go after second tier type WRs like Leslie Shepherd or Sean Dawkins.
