Ellsworth appears to have played his last game for the Browns. The best Butch Davis could say of him was that he had played "OK." Davis added, "We have 27 interceptions and he has one of them." Ellsworth is due to make $1.5 million next year, which is too much for a player if he's not starting.

The Canton Repository reports the Cleveland Browns coaching staff is excited about their secondary this year. Head coach Butch Davis said earlier this year that his cornerbacks and safeties may be the team's most pleasant surprise. Corey Fuller is projected to start at left corner while Daylon McCutcheon is penciled in at right cornerback. At safety, Marquis Smith is lining up at strong safety and Percy Ellsworth is lining up at free safety.

Tony Grossi reports for the Plain Dealer that while the Cleveland Browns would like to improve at the safety position, they may not be able to this year because it's not viewed as a strong position in the NFL Draft. The team may be looking to give Earl Little more playing time this year with hopes of him improving and there's the possibility of using Little, Marquis Smith and Percy Ellsworth in a rotation in the secondary. The Canton Repository reports both Cleveland Browns QB Tim Couch and RB Errict Rhett said it has become clear to them changing head coaches was a good idea. Both pointed to locker room division last season as one big reason a change was needed. S Percy Ellsworth’s starting free safety job is in jeopardy after he made just one interception in 16 starts last year. He acknowledged he had a poor season in 2000, but the he will play better this season. He said he felt sorry for former coach Chris Palmer, who was fired. DE Keith McKenzie knows there is a strong possibility he will go back to the passing-down role he had with the Packers. Courtney Brown will be one starter at defensive end and Stalin Colinet could join him in the starting lineup. Coach Butch Davis said MLB Wali Rainer practiced well on Monday.

Bill Rabinowitz reports for the Columbus Dispatch this week's Cleveland Browns mini-camp could help the team determine to what degree they need help at a certain position. "I don't know that it will have 100 percent impact, but it is definitely a factor," coach Butch Davis said. Davis declined to say which players have the most at stake this week, but it's likely that the team's RBs (Travis Prentice and Curtis Enis in particular), WRs (Kevin Johnson, JaJuan Dawson and Dennis Northcutt), safeties (Marquis Smith, Percy Ellsworth and Earl Little), CBs (Corey Fuller, Daylon McCutcheon and Lewis Sanders) and interior linemen on both offense and defense will get the most attention. Mini-camp will be run without pads so it is more difficult to judge the play of the linemen.

Steve King reports for the Sporting News the only current Cleveland Browns player who played for coach Butch Davis in college is S Earl Little. The expectation is Little will get a real shot at a starting spot at a position of great need for the Browns, safety. Little was very impressive when he hit the field last season. Current starters, Percy Ellsworth and Marquis Smith, did not play all that well last season. The team was trying to sign free agent S Mike Minter until he re-signed in Carolina. Ellsworth carries a big price tag and his roster spot reportedly could be on the "bubble."

The clearing out of some salary cap space today could pave the way for such a move.
