ESPN.com's John Clayton reports the Detroit Lions saved $1.3 million against the 2005 salary cap by releasing S Brian Walker. The team released him because they wanted to get younger at the safety position after having one of the oldest group of safeties in the league during the 2004 season.

Mike O'Hara, of the Detroit News, reports Detroit Lions S Brian Walker (knee) underwent arthroscopic surgery on his knee Friday, Sept. 3 and is expected to miss a couple weeks of action. Walker is at risk of not making the final roster after participating in just two preseason games. The team could also place Walker on injured reserve, officially ending his 2004 season.

He said there is some concern over the toe injury but Walker has continued to gut it out during games despite not being able to practice during the week.

Tom Kowalski reports for mlive.com Detroit Lions head coach Marty Mornhinweg said changes to the team's roster were necessary to make them a Super Bowl contender and had nothing to do with the team's 2-14 record in 2001. "We knew it almost going in," Mornhinweg said of last season. "You could see that pretty early in the season everything we did as a staff, from personnel and strategy, was for the future, it was for (this) year." The coach admitted later in the season that the team's lack of overall speed was shockingly bad and had surprised even him. They feel adding WRs Az Hakim and Bill Schroeder along with S Brian Walker helped the team address the speed issue.

Coach Marty Mornhinweg said the Lions aren't eliminating S Ron Rice (neck injury) from their plans, but the addition of S Brian Walker earlier today gives them "a lot of possibilities."

Updating a previous story, the Detroit Free Press reports Detroit Lions president Matt Millen spent Monday morning at the Combine. He was scheduled to meet free agent S Brian Walker (Dolphins), possibly to finalize a contract agreement, over dinner Monday evening. Walker's agent, Peter Schaffer of Denver, said: "I think they definitely want him. We're very impressed with their interest." Walker was scheduled to have a physical examination and meet with other team officials and coaches Tuesday in Detroit. Word is Walker wants a deal bigger than the one the Jets gave S Sam Garnes. That deal was for three years and $2.725 million.

The Miami Herald reports the Miami Dolphins are confident they wonít lose too many of their potential free agents. There are five the team is concerned with and they want to re-sign at least three. The five are DT Tim Bowens, S Brock Marion, S Brian Walker, DE Kenny Mixon, and DE Lorenzo Bromell. Marion is expected to be released because of his $4 million price tag. Bowens wants to stay with the Dolphins and could take less money than he would make with another team to stay.

Todd Archer, of the Palm Beach Post, reports for the Sporting News, that Miami Dolphins J.J. Johnson (quadriceps), RG Todd Perry (knee) and WR James McKnight (ribs) all missed practice time but are expected to play tonight. S Brian Walker continues to play with a cast to protect his right thumb.
