49ers | QBs Coach Hired

Mon, 26 Feb 2001 02:27:03 -0800

Matt Maiocco reports for the Santa Rosa Press Democrat that the San Francisco 49ers have hired Purdue QBs coach Greg Olson as their new QBs coach. He resigned from his position with Purdue and joined the team at the Combine. Head coach Steve Mariucci stated former QB Steve Bono was a strong candidate, too. In fact, Bono may serve as a volunteer coach with the team during training camp to help him on his transition from a player to a coach.

49ers | Interviews Continue

Fri, 16 Feb 2001 11:27:14 -0800

Matt Maiocco of the Press Democrat reports the 49ers interviewed University of Massachusetts head coach Mark Whipple for their vacant QBs coach position. He is the fifth person to have a formal meeting with coach Steve Mariucci. Ohio State assistant coach Tim Salem, Purdue QB coach Greg Olson, former Arizona State offensive coordinator John Pettas and former 49ers QB Steve Bono are also candidates for the job. However, Bono has previously expressed some doubt over him taking the job. Mariucci also said he may interview a few more candidates at the NFL combine. He may also interview some candidates for a new defensive staff position he is creating at the combine as well.

49ers | Team Notes

Sat, 10 Feb 2001 10:08:52 -0800

The San Francisco Chronicle reports San Francisco 49ers LB Ken Norton is still deciding on his retirement, but he appears to be leaning to returning to the NFL. He has been working out almost daily at the 49ers Santa Clara complex in hopes of getting his back in shape. If he does return, salary cap issues will probably force him out of San Francisco. GM Bill Walsh does not think Norton wil retire and coach Steve Mariucci is not urging him to do so, something the team did do right after the season ended. Reportedly, Steve Bono might take himself out the running for the QB coach job because of the long coaching hours.

49ers | Coaching Update

Fri, 09 Feb 2001 23:03:10 -0800

The Associated Press reports San Francisco 49ers head coach Steve Mariucci has interviewed three candidates for the team's vacant QBs coach job. Mariucci interviewed former NFL QB Steve Bono; former Arizona State offensive coordinator John Pettas; and Purdue QBs coach Greg Olson for the job. He expects to interview more candidates in the next few days. The 49ers also are considering the possibility of hiring another defensive assistant coach. Mariucci would like a veteran coach to work with defensive coordinator Jim Mora Jr. or to take over as secondary coach so Mora will only have to perform one job. According to Mariucci, he hired UCLA assistant Jason Tarver as a quality control coach.

As reported earlier, SportsLine.com's Mark Soltau reports the San Francisco 49ers are expected to promote QBs coach Greg Knapp to offensive coordinator once Marty Mornhinweg officially is named the Lions new head coach. GM Bill Walsh has already spoken to former 49ers QB Steve Bono about taking over Knapp's spot. Another name the team could consider is Bill Musgrave, but he was just named offensive coordinator for Al Groh at Virginia.

Panthers | Also Thinking Bono

Sun, 28 Feb 1999 10:20:00 -0800

The Charlotte Observer reports the Panthers appear to have decided they want a veteran QB at No. 2 and that in addition to Donald Hollas whom they have already visited with they are also giving veteran Steve Bono some thought. If a QB is signed the team would probably not re-sign Shane Matthews.
