Frank Schwab, of the Gazette, reports if the Denver Broncos keep three quarterbacks on their roster, QBs Matt Mauck and Danny Kanell will be battling to win that spot. Mauck is still eligible for one more year on the practice squad. Kanell doesn't have that fallback plan. Both quarterbacks were hopeful that with three preseason games left they could move up the depth chart. But they also said its better if they play without thinking about what will happen at the end of preseason.

The Broncos have kept only two quarterbacks on the active roster for most of the past two seasons, and unless Van Pelt stumbles badly, QBs Matt Mauck and Danny Kanell might be running out of time as Broncos.

Andrew Mason, of DenverBroncos.com, reports Denver Broncos QB Danny Kanell was disappointed to hear from the team's coaching staff that QB Bradlee Van Pelt would continue to work with the second-team offense during training camp. "(The coaches) sat us all down the quarterbacks the other day (and said), 'Here, this is what we are going to do,' " Kanell said. "I haven't slept the past couple of nights." While head coach Mike Shanahan has praised Van Pelt's performance thus far, the No. 2 job still remains up in the air.

"I've got a really good grasp of it (the) intricacies and the little ins and outs that (head coach Mike Shanahan) really tries to stress," Kanell said. Kanell added that he has matured a lot over the years, and he believes his time in the league gives him a leg up on the team's younger signal callers who will be pushing for the No. 2 job during training camp.

Kanell has more than two years of experience in the Broncos' offense as a strong point on his side. In fact, he has now been in head coach Mike Shanahan's system for a longer continuous stretch than any other in his career. "I've got a really good grasp of it - the intricacies and the little ins and outs that Coach Shanahan really tries to stress," Kanell said. The challenge for Kanell begins soon at training camp.

Patrick Saunders, of the Denver Post, reports Denver Broncos backup QB Danny Kanell has taken a pay cut to help the team's cap situation. He was scheduled to make $1 million this season, but when the Broncos recently asked him to take a pay cut, he obliged and now is scheduled to make about $650,000 (actually $665,000 is his new salary). "They asked me to do it," Kanell said Thursday, July 7, after the second day of the Broncos' three-day minicamp. "I didn't want any reason, other than my on-field performance, to determine my chances of making the team." Kanell is currently the team's No. 2 quarterback.

Andrew Mason, of DenverBroncos.com, reports Denver Broncos general manager Ted Sundquist said the team plans on standing pat with backup QBs Danny Kanell, Matt Mauck and Bradlee Van Pelt. "Barring any kind of unforeseen post-June 1 cut of a veteran guy that might fit in here and that we could squeeze in financially, I can see the young guys [Mauck and Van Pelt] battling with Danny for [the second and third-string job]," Sundquist said. "That's why we drafted them last year."

"Last year you could kind of tell he wasn't real strong," quarterbacks coach Pat McPherson said. "He's got a strong arm but he used his whole body to make some of those throws. But now he doesn't have to exert as much effort to make those throws as he did last year."

"Yes, I think anytime a guy goes through an offseason program, and has been using the terminology and been in the system, he is going to feel a lot more confident. We've had 17 team workouts and a number of those were 7-on-7 just throwing the football, so that, and the year before has really helped him," Shanahan said of Kanell.

"I mean, I'm so much more confident, and I feel so much more comfortable with the system. And I'm taking more of a leadership role." Broncos offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak says Kanell will be a different quarterback in 2004. "Danny's already a lot better now," Kubiak said. "He knows what he's doing, and he knows where we want him to go with the ball. Last year he didn't get very many reps behind Steve. He is already a better player for us."

Updating previous reports, Lee Rasizer, of the Rocky Mountain News, reports Denver Broncos QB Jarious Jackson ended up as the only serviceable quarterback during Friday's practice, Oct. 24, as QB Danny Kanell came down with the flu. Head coach Mike Shanahan is not sure if Kanell will be able to play in Week 8. "I really don't know," coach Mike Shanahan said of Kanell's availability. "He's got a touch of the flu, and we'll see how he is in a couple days." With QBs Jake Plummer (foot) and Steve Beuerlein (finger) sidelined with injuries, Jackson could wind up as the starting quarterback for Week 8.

Denver Broncos QB Jarious Jackson was re-signed seven weeks after being cut and is now the backup to starting QB Danny Kanell. Jackson kept in shape the past month or so by running and throwing in a park across the street from the Broncos' complex. His receivers were other players cut recently by the Broncos. He looked fine in practice Wednesday, Oct. 22.

Updating previous reports, Andrew Mason, of DenverBroncos.com, reports Denver Broncos QB Danny Kanell couldn't be happier about his second chance in the NFL. "It's just a greater appreciation," he said. "My passion for the game is so much greater now." Following a playoff run with the New York Giants his first year as a starter (1997), Kanell was benched the following season. He was traded to the Atlanta Falcons where he was almost non-existent. After a two-year stint with the Falcons, he has played everywhere from the Arena Football League to a year in the Independent Atlantic Baseball League.

The Washington Post reports Washington Redskins coach Marty Schottenheimer gave in on Monday and said the team will attempt to sign another quarterback, possibly as soon as tonight. "Essentially we are looking at those who are unemployed," he said. The list includes former Redskins QB John Friesz, Danny Kanell and Moses Moreno. The coach said he doesn't believe Jeff George will play on Friday against the Atlanta Falcons.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Rich Brooks has interviewed with Wake Forest about their vacant head coaching position. In other news, QB Danny Kanell's sister and brother-in-law were in an automobile accident on Monday night and Kanell missed Tuesday's practice. The Falcons worked out PK Chad Holleman and TE Tony Johnson recently but neither were immediately offered a deal.
