Frank Schwab, of the Gazette, reports if the Denver Broncos keep three quarterbacks on their roster, QBs Matt Mauck and Danny Kanell will be battling to win that spot. Mauck is still eligible for one more year on the practice squad. Kanell doesn't have that fallback plan. Both quarterbacks were hopeful that with three preseason games left they could move up the depth chart. But they also said its better if they play without thinking about what will happen at the end of preseason.

The Broncos have kept only two quarterbacks on the active roster for most of the past two seasons, and unless Van Pelt stumbles badly, QBs Matt Mauck and Danny Kanell might be running out of time as Broncos.

"(The coaches) sat us all down the quarterbacks the other day (and said), 'Here, this is what we are going to do,' " Kanell said. "I haven't slept the past couple of nights." While head coach Mike Shanahan has praised Van Pelt's performance thus far, the No. 2 job still remains up in the air.

Patrick Saunders, of the Denver Post, reports Denver Broncos backup QB Danny Kanell has taken a pay cut to help the team's cap situation. He was scheduled to make $1 million this season, but when the Broncos recently asked him to take a pay cut, he obliged and now is scheduled to make about $650,000 (actually $665,000 is his new salary). "They asked me to do it," Kanell said Thursday, July 7, after the second day of the Broncos' three-day minicamp. "I didn't want any reason, other than my on-field performance, to determine my chances of making the team." Kanell is currently the team's No. 2 quarterback.

"I mean, I'm so much more confident, and I feel so much more comfortable with the system. And I'm taking more of a leadership role." Head coach Mike Shanahan is not sure if Kanell will be able to play in Week 8. "I really don't know," coach Mike Shanahan said of Kanell's availability. "He's got a touch of the flu, and we'll see how he is in a couple days." With QBs Jake Plummer (foot) and Steve Beuerlein (finger) sidelined with injuries, Jackson could wind up as the starting quarterback for Week 8.

Denver Broncos QB Jarious Jackson was re-signed seven weeks after being cut and is now the backup to starting QB Danny Kanell. Jackson kept in shape the past month or so by running and throwing in a park across the street from the Broncos' complex. His receivers were other players cut recently by the Broncos. He looked fine in practice Wednesday, Oct. 22.

Updating previous reports, Andrew Mason, of DenverBroncos.com, reports Denver Broncos QB Danny Kanell couldn't be happier about his second chance in the NFL. "It's just a greater appreciation," he said. "My passion for the game is so much greater now." Following a playoff run with the New York Giants his first year as a starter (1997), Kanell was benched the following season. He was traded to the Atlanta Falcons where he was almost non-existent. After a two-year stint with the Falcons, he has played everywhere from the Arena Football League to a year in the Independent Atlantic Baseball League.

In other news, QB Danny Kanell's sister and brother-in-law were in an automobile accident on Monday night and Kanell missed Tuesday's practice. The Falcons worked out PK Chad Holleman and TE Tony Johnson recently but neither were immediately offered a deal.
