MiamiDolphins.com reports Miami Dolphins players hosted a fishing clinic for the Boys and Girls Club. FS Jason Allen, QB John Beck, WR Greg Camarillo, LB Channing Crowder, DL Junior Glymph, TE Aaron Halterman, OG Justin Smiley and former WR O.J. McDuffie were all in attendance at the fishing clinic. The clinic is a part of the 12th annual Miami Dolphins Fishing Tournament to benefit the Miami Dolphins Foundation.

Alex Marvez, of the Sun-Sentinel, reports Miami Dolphins head coach Dave Wannstedt was deposed Wednesday, June 23, in the malpractice and gross negligence case of former Dolphins WR O.J. McDuffie, attorney Herman Russomanno said. McDuffie is suing former Dolphins team doctor John Uribe, current orthopedic consultants Dan Kanell and George Caldwell, foot specialist Robert Mills, radiologist Michael Thorpe, HealthSouth Doctors Hospital and Holy Cross Hospital. The lawsuit revolves around a left big toe injury suffered in November 1999, that eventually ended McDuffie's career.

Chris Perkins reports for the Sun Sentinel discovery papers are expected to be served to the Miami Dolphins in the WR O.J. McDuffie case. McDuffie's attorney said after the papers are served the Dolphins will have 20 days to either file a dismissal motion or a responsive pleading. "He had a multimillion- dollar contract that was forfeited," attorney Herman Russomanno said, adding McDuffie also lost potential endorsements and will seek compensation for pain and suffering, mental anguish and his ability to enjoy life.

The Miami Herald reports former Miami Dolphins WR O.J. McDuffie filed a complaint in a Miami court on Friday accusing former and current team physicians of malpractice and gross negligence in the treatment of McDuffie's 1999 left big toe injury. The suit could eventually include other current and former members of the Dolphins staff, such as former coach Jimmy Johnson.

Updating previous reports, Associated Press reports former Dolphins WR O.J. McDuffie (toe) still plans to sue the Miami Dolphins over the way he believes his toe injury was treated. McDuffie said he wants to make sure no other players are treated the same way by the Dolphins. He says the team lied to him about how serious his toe injury was and it became worse when he played on it. McDuffie said he knew he'd be playing hurt but didn't know he'd be ending his career because of it.

Wannstedt said he believes McDuffie wants to attempt a comeback from the toe injury that caused him to miss the 2001 season. Wannstedt said he didn’t expect McDuffie to pursue a third surgery on his toe. "All I can say probably is he’s not ready right now to end his career,” Wannstedt said.

As an update to previous reports, the Miami Herald reports the Miami Dolphins are expected to release RB J.J. Johnson, TE Hunter Goodwin, WR O.J. McDuffie, S Shawn Wooden and possibly S Brock Marion. Marion's release appears to depend on whether or not he'll agree to restructure his contract between now and March 1, which is when he's due a $2 million roster bonus. By releasing those players, the Dolphins would save about $11 million against the salary cap this year.

Alex Marvez reports for the Sun-Sentinel by failing to activate WR O.J. McDuffie from the PUP list today, the Miami Dolphins may have seen McDuffie play his last game for the team. He's tried hard to make it back from a painful toe injury, but it just did not happen. McDuffie, who is scheduled to make $3.5 million in base salary in 2002, is expected to retire or get released in the off-season. McDuffie is the fourth-leading receiver in team history.

Miami Dolphins.com reports the team has placed DT Daryl Gardener (back) and G Mark Dixon (leg/knee) on injured reserve. As expected, WR O.J. McDuffie and TE Alonzo Mayes will not be activated and their seasons will end on the PUP list meaning they will not play this season. The team signed DT Henry Taylor to a two-year contract. He played in one game with the Bears before being waived on October 29.

McDuffie was placed on the PUP list at the end of the pre-season, but McDuffie said that he doesn’t feel that the toe’s ready and doesn’t think the toe will get any better. The two began exchanging words and McDuffie had to be restrained by Jason Taylor. Coach Dave Wannstedt stopped practice and made it clear incidences like that are not tolerated.

Everyone involved with the Dolphins knows, barring some significant change, this is McDuffie's last season. McDuffie would rather not go out this way, but his toe injury is too painful to practice with. "I can't do the grind of practice every day," said McDuffie. Right now he enthusiastically throws passes to fellow receivers and watches them work and he helps younger players learn the offense.

McDuffie told the Herald on Monday McDuffie is not expected to practice in the early part of training camp and could end up on the PUP list. His left big toe still isn't in good enough condition to go through the rigors of practice. The source added, "He said it was feeling pretty good, actually, if that makes sense." McDuffie reportedly intends to participate in all meetings and be at practices as an observer.

The Miami Herald reports Miami Dolphins WR O.J. McDuffie stated he's able to walk, but that's about it right now. McDuffie has been hampered by a toe injury the past 18 months and stated he can't do too much without a great deal of pain. His toe is still suffering problems and McDuffie acknowledged that it may force him into retirement or make him take another long period of time off from the game. The team, should they elect to keep him, may place him on the PUP list later this summer if the injury doesn't improve.

Mixon said he plans to play at his current weight of 265. LB Scott Galyon (ACL, right knee) said he's having problems with his left knee, which required extensive surgery in 1998. QB Jay Fiedler (shoulder) participated in seven-on-seven and individual drills. The Miami Herald's Armando Salguero reports the Miami Dolphins start a mini-camp this Friday and all of Miami's players will attend, according to coach Dave Wannstedt. Some players, including CB Sam Madison, WR O.J. McDuffie and DB Jeff Harris, likely will be limited during the practices because they are still recovering from off-season surgery or injuries. SportsLine.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the Miami Dolphins and WR O.J. McDuffie have reached an agreement on a new deal to restructure his contract. By doing so, the Dolphins have opened more than $1 million in additional room under the salary cap. McDuffie's base salary was set at $2.09 million this year, but it has now been reduced to $1 million, which is guaranteed money regardless if he isn't able to play or is released. He can earn another $1.35 million in incentives, with up to $750,000 coming in the form of receiving bonuses and $600,000 in the form of playing time incentives.

As an update to previous reports, SportsLine.com's Len Pasquarelli reports Miami Dolphins WR O.J. McDuffie is likely to take a pay cut with the Dolphins. The reason being is the $850,000 he'd receive would be guaranteed money and there's still speculation brewing that McDuffie may not ever be able to successfully come back from toe problems. So, even if the team cut him, he'd still land the $850,000 for the upcoming year.

As an update to an earlier story, the Miami Herald reports Miami Dolphins WR O.J. McDuffie may accept a pay cut as early as today. An NFL source said, barring any last second problems, McDuffie is expected to accept an undetermined cut from his $2.1 million base salary. The cut, when accepted, will basically guarantee McDuffie a spot on the 2001 roster. McDuffie's pay cut may allow the Dolphins to re-sign S Brock Marion. S Marcus Robertson's contract with Seattle could help set the market value for Marion at about $1.3 million per year.

The Miami Herald reports the Miami Dolphins have reportedly requested WR O.J. McDuffie to take a pay cut. According to two NFL sources, the Dolphins want to cut McDuffie's $2.9 million salary cap figure by lowering his base salary. His agent has previously said he will not accept a pay cut for McDuffie. Reportedly, coach Dave Wannstedt recently met with McDuffie about the pay cut and Dolphins negotiators have explained it to agent Joel Segal. A source said Segal presented the team with a counter-proposal. At this point the team has not threatened McDuffie with his release. The Dolphins reportedly are worried about a potential injury grievance being filed by McDuffie. In 1999 he played on an injured toe, which he found out later made it worse and could have been career threatening despite being diagnosed by a team doctor as not career-threatening.

Coach Dave Wannstedt said the signing of free agent WR James McKnight "significantly upgrades" the WR position. He joins Oronde Gadsden and O.J. McDuffie as primary wideouts. "Everybody knows we're going to be looking at receivers," said Rick Spielman, the director of player personnel. "There's some good receivers down here." Smaller WRs such as Santana Moss and Snoop Minnis are probably not on the team's list. Of the Dolphins top four receivers, only Oronde Gadsden is a lock to return. Tony Martin and O.J. McDuffie may be released for salary cap reasons, and Leslie Shepherd is set to become an unrestricted free agent when the NFL's signing period begins March 2. Other areas of need for the team are OL, LB and QB.
