On Thursday, April 29, Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs suggested he may call some of the team's franchise legends to seek permission to reinstate numbers that have been unofficially retired over the years. "It's become a problem," Gibbs said. "I think what I'm going to do is consult some of those guys whose numbers haven't been used, see what their opinion is. ... Obviously, you don't want to do something that hurts somebody's feelings." One problem is with the 80s, where every number but former Redskins WR Art Monk's 81 has been issued, which left Redskins WR James Thrash was not assigned a number as of Thursday.

Monk is one of the 15 finalists who will be considered for election to the Hall of Fame when the Hall's Board of Selectors meet in Houston, Texas on Saturday, Jan. 31. "When you're looking at the value to a team or the value of the person who's playing – he was a big strong guy who wasn't afraid to go inside and catch the ball in the middle of the field," Gibbs said. "He caught most of his stuff in the middle – I think he had the toughest yards. Of course, we could have played him outside all the time, but we didn't do that. I always thought that went to his credit—his stats actually could have been much more."
