49ers | Police and Courts

Wed, 30 Jun 1999 20:00:00 -0700

The AP reports that prosecutors in the rape trial of 49ers QB Jim Druckenmiller want to move the trial to prevent "favorable bias" for the former Virginia Tech star. They feel like finding a neutral jury is next to impossible because of the popularity of Druckenmiller from his college days. Bev Davis, one of Druckenmiller's lawyers, said the motion to move the trial was without merit and would be opposed during a pretrial hearing July 9. The trial is scheduled for July 19th.

The San Jose Mercury News reports, that as reported earlier, QB Steve Stenstrom worked out for the 49ers on Thursday, rolling out and throwing passes for about 30 minutes after mini-camp practice. "Everybody's been great around here," said Stenstrom, who has also worked out for Detroit but has received no offers. "Coach Mariucci recruited me out of high school, so it was good to see him again." Mariucci downplayed the notion that Stenstrom's tryout is bad news for QB Jim Druckenmiller, who is also at the minicamp. "Steve Stenstrom is coming in for a quick workout," Mariucci said. "And that issue (of Druckenmiller's legal entanglements) will resolve itself as soon as it possibly can. We are not letting that make our decision for us right now."

49ers | Druckenmiller May Not be Cut After All

Tue, 01 Jun 1999 00:00:00 -0700

Matt Maiocco, of the Contra Costa Times, is reporting the San Francisco 49ers may not be able to release QB Jim Druckenmiller after all - not even if they want to. If the team were to release him and another team picked him up, the 49ers would then be responsible for the remainder of his signing bonus. That would be roughly $1.34 million. The team is currently about $300,000 under the salary cap. However, if they release him and nobody picks him off of waivers the team would save $559,500. It could be a gamble the 49ers aren't ready to take.
