Updating a confusing story, John Clayton reports for ESPN free agent DB Lamar Campbell (Lions) was actually on a flight to Pittsburgh for a visit when the Lions announced he had agreed to a new contract. Now it looks as though the Lions changed some language in the contract and when some other things were clarified, Campbell accepted the deal to remain with the Lions.

Updating previous stories, John Clayton reports for ESPN the contract agreed to with the Detroit Lions by free agent DB Lamar Campbell to re-sign with the team is for four years and is worth 4.4 million, including a $1 million signing bonus. Again, earlier reports have his agent saying the deal is not done yet.

According to the Tribune Review, agent Michael Bauer said Thursday a deal between the Detroit Lions and DB Lamar Campbell is close, but not done. He said Campbell plans to complete his free agent visit with the Steelers Friday. "He's definitely going to meet with the Steelers and he definitely hasn't committed to the Lions," said Bauer. The Lions announced earlier Thursday Campbell had agreed to terms with them. Official word should be coming soon.

Detroit Lions.com reports coach Marty Mornhinweg said Friday following practice he thinks RB James Stewart (ankle) could play Sunday. "There is a good chance that James could be on the field," he said. Stewart practiced Thursday and Friday with a significant amount of tape on the injured right ankle. It does not appear rookie QB Mike McMahon (foot) can play. If McMahon can't go, Ty Detmer will get his fourth start of the season at quarterback. WR Bert Emanuel (knee) will play, according to the coach. LB Barrett Green (back) looks like he will be OUT. S Lamar Campbell (thigh) will also be a game time decision. DE James Hall (knee) was downgraded to doubtful for the game. Backup CB Chidi Iwuoma (thigh) is expected to play.

Tom Kowalski reports for mlive.com many of the free agents that are on the Detroit Lions roster may see action Sunday due to the team's injury situation. If RB James Stewart (ankle) can't play, RB Aveion Cason, who was signed in late November, is expected to get a lot of looks. With rookie QB Mike McMahon (foot) expected to sit again, QB Ty Detmer will get the call with Scott Dreisbach as the No. 2 QB. The injury situation at WR may force the team to sign WR Latef Grim from the practice squad although coach Marty Mornhinweg said he does not anticipate doing so. S Marty Carter may start this week with Lamar Campbell (thigh) doubtful. Also LB Brian Williams will see extensive action with Barrett Green (back) most likely OUT again.

Both are "doubtful to questionable" for week eight's game. G Tony Semple (back) is improving and the team hopes he'll be ready to go for this weekend's game. Mlive.com reports Detroit Lions S Lamar Campbell sustained a hamstring injury during yesterday's game. His injury forced S Kurt Schulz (back surgery), making his season debut, to play much more than the team had anticipated. He was expected to get in for 12 to 15 plays, but played about 40.

Curt Sylvester reports for the Free Press Detroit Lions SS Ron Rice (toe) will not play this week. Lamar Campbell is expected to start at strong safety in Rice's place. The Lions medical staff apparently doesn't think the injury will keep Rice out of the Sept. 9 season opener at Green Bay. WR Herman Moore (shoulder), TE David Sloan (hand) and RB Amp Lee (hamstring) may see action in Saturday's pre-season game. G Stockar McDougle (groin) and DT Shaun Rogers (ankle) definitely will play.

Tom Kowalski reports for Mlive.com the Detroit Lions have moved Lamar Campbell from cornerback to safety this season. "It's a lot to learn, but that's the challenge," said Campbell. He also added, "I'd be lying if I said I didn't prefer free safety." The Lions added off-season help at cornerback, but none at safety making Campbell's move a needed one. To prepare for his new role, Campbell bulked up from his playing weight of 181 pounds last year to 194 pounds this season.

According to Curt Sylvester of the Free Press, the Detroit Lions will probably not pursue QB Doug Flutie. He wants to be a starter and likely will demand a starter's pay. Sources close to C Mike Compton said he told agent Vern Sharbaugh his Lions days are over. He reportedly is interested in playing in Carolina, Jacksonville or Washington. The team tendered offers to three restricted free agents, DB Lamar Campbell, C Eric Beverly and G Kerlin Blaise. The team wants to re-sign G Tony Semple and special-teams player Brock Olivo. Unrestricted free agents, RB Mario Bates, OT Barrett Brooks, QB Stoney Case and CB Marquis Walker probably won't be re-signed.

In other news, the team is still pondering who to start at right tackle. Barrett Brooks and Ray Roberts are the two candidates and head coach Gary Moeller has yet to make up his mind on them. CB Marquis Walker (wrist) will be out at least three games due to a broken bone and ligament damage in his wrist. The team will use either DB Darnell Walker or DB Lamar Campbell in the starting lineup this weekend to replace injured CB Bryant Westbrook (Achilles').
