The Green Bay Packers named running backs coach Edgar Bennett as their new receivers coach Friday, Feb. 25, reports Pete Dougherty, of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. Bennett was a running back for eight seasons in the NFL, and it's the only position he's coached in six seasons as an NFL assistant. However, he won over head coach Mike McCarthy with his preparation and attention to deal. "At the end of the day the guy jumped through the door to do the job," McCarthy said. Bennett replaces Jimmy Robinson, who left to become the assistant head coach-receivers coach with the Dallas Cowboys.

The Green Bay Packers think rookie RB James Starks may have the athletic ability to force his way onto the field at times this year, reports Pete Dougherty, of The Green Bay Press-Gazette. Running backs coach Edgar Bennett said Starks is explosive, has a good change of direction and good hands coming out of the backfield. How he handles pass protection may go a long way into his playing time. The team is also looking at him as a possible long-term replacement for RB Ryan Grant, who has two years remaining on his contract.

Tom Silverstein, of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reports Green Bay Packers RB Brandon Jackson rushed for 50 yards on 10 carries in the team's Week 11 game and the coaches were impressed. "When he gets his opportunities, the kid makes the most of it. That's how it has to be. When he's thrown into the mix, you just pick up and go. Yesterday, he did a fantastic job again, as far as breaking tackles, showing burst, showing good strength," running backs coach Edgar Bennett said.

Jason Wilde, of the Wisconsin State Journal, reports Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy and offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski plan to meet with running backs coach Edgar Bennett, tight ends coach Joe Philbin and assistant offensive line coach James Campen. "You'd like to have the staff done yesterday," said McCarthy. "(But) we're going to move forward - due diligence is critical, chemistry is critical - (and) Jeff is going to have a big part in every guy we hire of the offensive assistants."

The Green Bay Packers have named Edgar Bennett as their new running backs coach, replacing previous running backs coach Johnny Roland, who will accept a similar position with the New Orleans Saints. Bennett was the Packers' leading rusher in 1996 when they won the Super Bowl. For the past four years, Bennett has been in charge of the team's player development department.

He filled that position late in the year for Sylvester Croom, who went on to head coach at Mississippi State. Bennett is currently the team's director of player development.

Associated Press reports Green Bay Packers assistant running backs coach Edgar Bennett (knee) suffered an injured right knee during practice Thursday, Jan. 8, after being bowled over by two players during a scuffle. Bennett was going to have the team's medical staff look at his knee following practice but he wasn't available for an update on his condition.

Current running backs coach Sylvester Croom, who was recently hired as the head coach at Mississippi State University, is devoting the majority of his time to hiring his MSU coaching staff and recruiting, thus allowing Bennett an opportunity to conduct film studies and meetings with the team's running backs.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports Green Bay Packers WR Robert Ferguson feels he’s a little behind the rest of the other receivers on the team. Ferguson has stayed after practice for extra work on the first two days of training camp. He ran routes on Saturday, caught balls that former RB Edgar Bennett shot from the Jugs machine after the morning practice Sunday, then worked on his footwork after the afternoon practice.

He would replace Gill Byrd, who left last month after two years as executive director of player programs and community affairs. Sources said he was expected to be in Green Bay for an interview this week. The situation appears to be the job is Bennett's if he wants it. GM Ron Wolf, who is stepping down as GM around June 1, recently signed a multi-year contract to serve as a consultant with the Packers. The Packers would receive draft-choice compensation if Wolf wanted to work for another team, but no compensation if Wolf received some form of ownership from another team.
