Associated Press reports Detroit Lions rookie RB Luke Staley (knee) had his knee re-examined by the doctor that performed surgery on it previously and was given three options: 1) put a brace on it and play 2) have another surgery on the ACL and some other procedures or 3) retire. Head coach Marty Mornhinweg said he doesn’t think Staley, the team’s seventh-round draft choice, will retire. He insinuated that he wants to play this year while wearing a brace on the knee.

He continues to await a properly fitting brace to help stabilize the knee that he sprained Monday afternoon. "The brace should be in and there are some other things we are doing just to be sure," coach Marty Mornhinweg said. "We also sent the MRI results to another doctor, and there really isn't any rush at this time. But we want to make sure this brace fits him perfectly. We want to make sure his range of motion is there and there is no discomfort."

An MRI showed no serious problems, but Staley will be sporting a brace on the knee when practices resume on Thursday. Head coach Marty Mornhinweg said he’ll strongly suggest the brace sticks with Staley all year.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports Brigham Young University RB Luke Staley worked out on Wednesday in front of forty-one scouts and coaches from around the league. Staley, who skipped his senior season to enter the draft, had his first workout since breaking his leg near the end of the season. Staley had surgery -- the 11th of his career -- to repair the broken fibula. Staley has just been running hard again for 3 weeks, but was able to run a 4.45 "40" for those on hand. He had a 36" vertical jump and bench-pressed 225 lbs. 19 times. He finished the day off with specialized drills upon request.
