Tom Kowalski, of mlive.com, reports for the Sporting News Detroit Lions RB Luke Staley (knee) missed his rookie season, but he's now fully recovered. If he stays healthy, he could be a factor in the Lions backup running back competition in training camp. He has the receiving skills and speed to be an explosive third-down back.

Associated Press reports Detroit Lions rookie RB Luke Staley (knee) had his knee re-examined by the doctor that performed surgery on it previously and was given three options: 1) put a brace on it and play 2) have another surgery on the ACL and some other procedures or 3) retire. Head coach Marty Mornhinweg said he doesn’t think Staley, the team’s seventh-round draft choice, will retire. He insinuated that he wants to play this year while wearing a brace on the knee.

Staley is going to return to Colorado to see the doctor who previously performed surgery on his knee . “There is a little more concern since the first time I addressed it,” said head coach Marty Mornhinweg.

DetroitLions.com reports rookie RB Luke Staley (knee) missed practice once again on Friday. He continues to await a properly fitting brace to help stabilize the knee that he sprained Monday afternoon. "The brace should be in and there are some other things we are doing just to be sure," coach Marty Mornhinweg said. "We also sent the MRI results to another doctor, and there really isn't any rush at this time. But we want to make sure this brace fits him perfectly. We want to make sure his range of motion is there and there is no discomfort."

The Detroit News reports Detroit Lions rookie RB Luke Staley (knee) was held out of practice on Tuesday due to soreness in his right knee after running sprints on Monday. An MRI showed no serious problems, but Staley will be sporting a brace on the knee when practices resume on Thursday. Head coach Marty Mornhinweg said he’ll strongly suggest the brace sticks with Staley all year.

Updating Friday’s report, ESPN.com’s Len Pasquarelli reports Detroit Lions rookie RB Luke Staley received a two-year, $551,334 deal from the team that included a $26,334 signing bonus. Staley will have base salaries of $225,000 (2002) and $300,000 (2003).

DetroitLions.com reports Detroit Lions head coach Marty Mornhinweg is impressed with the team’s depth at running back and liked what he has seen from RBs James Stewart, Lamont Warren and Aveion Cason. In addition to Stewart, Warren and Cason, the team has RBs Luke Staley, James Mungro and Stephen Trejo. Mornhinweg said Trejo is expected to play at fullback this year, but could play at tight end if it is necessary.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports Brigham Young University RB Luke Staley worked out on Wednesday in front of forty-one scouts and coaches from around the league. Staley, who skipped his senior season to enter the draft, had his first workout since breaking his leg near the end of the season. Staley had surgery -- the 11th of his career -- to repair the broken fibula. Staley has just been running hard again for 3 weeks, but was able to run a 4.45 "40" for those on hand. He had a 36" vertical jump and bench-pressed 225 lbs. 19 times. He finished the day off with specialized drills upon request.
