Nationals | Jayson Werth plans to be aggressive

Fri, 07 Mar 2014 11:05:33 -0800

Washington Nationals OF Jayson Werth plans to be aggressive on the base paths this year, and manager Matt Williams' style of managing should lend nicely to that. Werth said his offensive ideology is "in line" with Williams'. The Nationals coaching staff is letting the players make their own reads and giving the veterans green lights to decide when to run. "That's the only way to steal bases," Werth said. "That's how base stealers steal bases. That's how guys become great base stealers. You don't become a good base stealer by getting steal signs and stealing. That's when you get thrown out. Those philosophies are right now. I'm really happy about that."

Fantasy Tip: Werth should be a lock to hit 20 home runs, depending on health. Along with increased opportunities to steal bags, despite some loss in speed due to age, Werth looks much more attractive. Don't rule out double-digit stolen bases with Williams at the helm.

Nationals | Jayson Werth doesn't want to hit leadoff

Thu, 20 Feb 2014 16:04:01 -0800

Washington Nationals OF Jayson Werth said he'd rather not hit leadoff last year after being one of the team's best hitters in 2013. "The only reason why I hit one that year was because we needed somebody to do it," Werth said. "I didn't have a whole lot of power at the time. I did my job. I thought I did pretty good at one. I don't want to ever do it again."
